of Wax (1953)
House of Wax (1953)
This film is The 95th installment on the North American all-time box office chart.
The film tells the story of a wax artist who uses real corpses to make wax figures. The male protagonist is a wax artist who co-founded a wax museum. For the insurance money, the partner set fire to the wax museum and knocked the male lead unconscious in the wax museum. Afterwards, people thought that the hero was dead, but in fact he was only burned to a disability. Next, the male protagonist begins to take revenge, he kills his partner and his lover, and then plans to attack the lover's roommate. When the male protagonist started, his roommate found him, ran to a friend's house and hid, and told the police. Later, the male protagonist co-founded a new wax museum, which attracted everyone to watch, and also attracted roommates and her friends to the wax museum. When the male protagonist sees his roommate, he wants to make her a wax figure, because she is very similar to Joan of Arc in temperament. After closing at night, the male protagonist locks his roommate in the wax museum, arrests her, and prepares to make Joan of Arc. At this time, the police station inquired about what happened from the captured male protagonist's men, so the police quickly came to arrest the male protagonist. In the end, the cops scuffle with the hero, the roommate is rescued, and the hero falls into the fucking hot wax.
It's a mediocre movie to watch now, outdated from plot to theme, from production to performance. Every bridge and scene in this film can be found in modern movies, so I don't seem to have the slightest feeling. Of course, it is wrong for me to say this, because the modern movies that existed in this film first, in fact, should be said that modern films have borrowed from this film. It's just a preconceived feeling, so I can't have any interest in this film.
In my opinion, the theme that the film wants to express is also conventional. It has two aspects, one is revenge, and the other is the crazy pursuit of art. These two points are as boring as the plot of the movie, so I have nothing to say either.
From the perspective of the film's release period, the filming is still quite brilliant. The real wax figures, the creation of the horror atmosphere, the contrast of the music, and the use of light and shadow all give the film a real horror atmosphere. From this point, I also understand why the box office of this film is so high. The audience is all here to find out, like to see how a corpse turns into a wax figure, and so on. Of course, the film still has its shortcomings. The most prominent is that the plot of the film is straightforward and has no suspense, which makes the audience guess that the male protagonist is the real murderer behind the scenes ten minutes after the film starts, which looks very boring. But in any case, as a horror film, this film was still relatively prominent in the 1950s, especially those realistic wax figures, which are equally amazing today.
The actors' acting skills are ordinary, they are all unknown Hollywood actors, needless to say. The heroine Phyllis Kirk is a very ordinary woman, she just looks beautiful, how can such a woman become popular? Others are tricks, not to mention.
in conclusion. It's a clichéd movie from a modern perspective, with nothing to watch, but it was great in the era it was released. To describe it in one word, it is "outdated".
