Another ghost story

I have to admit, I love that Rex Harrison

was made in 1947, when Rex was in his thirties, very young. There are no folds on the forehead or anything, and the dimples around the mouth have not been photographed. So deep.

This film is black and white, and Rex plays the captain, who is wearing a black suit from beginning to end. Obviously he needs to be a vulgar captain, but his innate nobility feels like an earl.

After Lucy's unknown husband dies, she finds a house near the sea. This house happens to be what Rex owned during his lifetime. Lucy obviously took Rex a little by surprise knowing that a ghost was going to move in. He needs someone who loves the house to take good care of his old home. Lucy did it.

The ghost of the captain appeared and disappeared for a while. His sunshine and perseverance brought Lucy a new life. Unconsciously, the captain knew that the two of them were secretly in love. However, he has no way to be with Lucy in real life, he is always a ghost. Not really - people.

Lucy also knew the reality of what the captain said, just happened to be deceived by a garbage writer who came out. Lucy had the desire to get married with him. The captain warned Lucy before that this man was not a good person. The advice failed and he left sadly. Before leaving, wiped all Lucy's memory of him.

Lucy later found the home of the Huaxin writer. After learning that she had been deceived, she lived in the captain's big house for the rest of her life.

Lucy was grey-haired and died on the sofa. The captain stood before the dead Lucy in those black leather shoes, calling her name softly. The soul of young Lucy came out, and they finally walked together hand in hand.

I think this movie is comparable to "The Ghost Story". Black and white films are particularly attractive. It's a pity that the captain and Lucy didn't have that kiss. On the contrary, Lucy and the Huaxin writer have two kiss scenes, both of which were seen by the captain.

I am a ghost that will never change. You'd better find another man to live with.

But the movie is a comedy, without a trace of heaviness and unhappiness. There is no so-called depth imposed, and there is no very deep bitterness scene. After watching it in one breath, I like the captain who values love and justice.

Love Rex Harrison's British accent.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir quotes

  • Captain Gregg: [dictating his memoirs to Lucy] Ah yes. The customs are Marseilles are different to any...

    Lucy Muir: Different *from*.

Captain Gregg: *To* or *from*, who cares? This isn't a blasted literary epic, it's the unvarnished story of a seaman's life!

Lucy Muir: It certainly is unvarnished!

Captain Gregg: Well, smear on your own varnish, change the grammar all you please, but leave the guts in it!

  • Lucy Muir: You seem to be very... earthly for a spirit.

Capt. Daniel Gregg: And you, madam, are enough to make a saint turn to blasphemy!
