The first half of the film is completely a wonderful romantic drama. A displaced writer meets a girl who is unwilling to live in the desert. Fortunately, the film finally pulls back to the theme of love.

Based on Robert E. Sherwood's play of the same name, the "contrived" lines and unique plot constructions throughout the film are acceptable.

All three lead actors put on excellent performances, Leslie Howard fits the character perfectly, Bette Davis is so familiar with the role, and Humphrey Bogart got his initial spotlight through this film.
