Traveling through time and space, to the Americas of the 21st century, the Walker family. My father just died, leaving behind a strong mother who is always correct and difficult to please, 5 children with different personalities and troubles, a mistress who has been hiding for 20 years, an illegitimate daughter who does not know who her father is, and a crumbling family. In business, the
eldest daughter inherited the company and became the president, facing debts, an increasingly cold husband, and a sick daughter. The eldest son has worked for the company for many years, but he is faced with the fact that his sister has inherited the throne and he is infertile. The second son has the least conflict with his family, but his emotional life is a mess, and there is no way that gays and lesbians have more problems to maintain a relationship than heterosexuals. The second daughter is a Republican, and her mother could not forgive her for supporting the war—or for supporting her younger brother to join the military. Younger brother, troubled teenager at home, overprotection from family + trauma from war - drugs.
There are no saints in this family, and saints can go crazy when they come to their house. There are no secrets in this family, and the secret he just said was passed back to his ears 2 seconds later. Always full of contradictions, always quarrelling. And the mother has to take pains to maintain the appearance of a big happy family, "Let's look like the Kennedy family."
Amazingly, they are indeed one big happy family. No matter how many contradictions, they love each other, no matter how difficult it is, they move forward hand in hand, just like their name, walkers.
Is the bridge old-fashioned? frequently. Preaching? Not a lot. Are people creating conflicts? quite obvious. But this drama attracted me deeply. I picked on their faults and got angry at some of their behaviors and words, but I was always moved by them.
Contradictions, quarrels, picky, nosy. . . . . Because they are family, because they care about each other, love each other, and be honest with each other. Sometimes I see the shadow of my own life in the play and can't help but smile. Although I keep picking on them, I know I don't necessarily have them as well.
To maintain a big family, patience is a must, but sometimes, arguing is also a good choice.
