In his mind, he saved the young man and saved his own soul. The real situation is unknown, but what difference does it make to a dying person. He just thinks it's worth it for him to do it.
Many films like this kind of storytelling, but this one is very comfortable. There are no weird shaky shots, it's a bit cold, but the tones are definitely warm. Probably the coldest place will be a little warmer.
