162 period event I didn’t write a PPT, and I kept clamoring to write something to everyone, and sort out the context of the following film "The Potmaker, Tailor, Soldier, and Spy". The main body is the timeline, and I wrote a few thoughts afterwards. Let's do it, welcome to follow posts and make bricks.
This timeline is the stories in the movie, arranged in chronological order. Because the time of the part is different from the original, I will separately indicate the difference from the original in parentheses.
The timeline is as follows:
1. As early as before World War II, the boss and Smiley worked in the "Yuanchang", which is the British foreign intelligence agency, that is, MI6 in reality.
2. Percy Allerne, Roy Brand, Bill Haydn, Jim Pledo, Toby Easthass, all of which are a new generation of senior spies excavated or cultivated by the boss and Smalley Among them, Toby Isterhas was rescued by the boss from Hungary, and he was the youngest; Bill Haydn and Jim Pledo were Cambridge classmates and were called "two inseparable" in the early years. Colleagues, Close friend, lover; Percy has long sleeves and is good at dancing, proud of officialdom, good at making leaders, and having long-term conflicts with the boss.
In 3.1950, Bill Haydn's belief in the West was shaken and he began to provide Kara (a member of the Soviet Moscow Intelligence Center) with information related to the United States. At this time, Haydn's position was only shaken, and no intelligence related to the United Kingdom was provided.
In 4.1955, the Soviet counter-revolutionary movement spread to the intelligence center. Smiley traveled around the world, met with intelligence personnel who defected from the Soviet Union, and met Kara in Delhi. Kara was implicated in the movement and was very likely to be shot after returning to China. History Miley's lobbying was unsuccessful, and Kara resolutely returned home and took away Smiley's lighter as a souvenir. (In the original work, Kara killed the boss of the intelligence center less than a month after he returned to China, and became the boss himself.) Smiley and Karajing both had a deep impression on each other and regarded each other as their important opponents.
In 5.1959, Colonel Vidorov, a senior spy in the Moscow Center, came to London, England, as the cultural counselor of the embassy, under the pseudonym Polyakov, and the mission was to connect with "Gopher" Bill Haydn. (Note: The inference of this time in 1959 originated from what Connie said 15 years ago when Smiley met Connie; it was 1974; in the original work, Polyakov came to London in 1963)
6 "Christmas party", singing the Soviet national anthem in unison; the boss laughed at Percy's poor bartending level; Smiley ran into Haydn and Ann cheating; Haydn and Pledo looked at each other and smiled profoundly, the intersection of all the clues in the whole play. (Note: Not in the original work of the Christmas party, this is the original creation of the screenwriter, the icing on the cake)
7. Bill Haydn introduced the source of the "Witcher" to Percy Alleryne, and Percy aside the boss and Smalley, and Haydn and Brand , Isterhas formed a small group to go it alone. Reporting directly to Lacan and the Secretary of Defense, Percy has always hoped to exchange information with the United States through wizard intelligence, and this is also the real purpose of the Moscow Center to obtain American intelligence! (Note: Lacan is an assistant to the Secretary of Defense, a member of the Cabinet Office, and the Chief Inspector of Intelligence Affairs)
8. Percy obtained the analysis report of the Soviet High Command on the Soviet Black Sea Naval Exercises through the "Witchcraft Project." A formal showdown to the boss and Smiley, the boss was furious and drove everyone out of the meeting room.
9. The boss believes that there is a problem with the intelligence source of the "Witcher", and due to the fact that Yuanchang has been frustrated in recent years, the boss expected that there must be an inner ghost in the game. He searched a large number of files and looked for clues by himself, and he became increasingly closed, and finally came to the inner ghost. Among the five people lurking at the highest level, they were codenamed according to nursery rhymes: Percy Alleline-Potmaker; Bill Haydn-Tailor; Roy Brand-Soldier; Toby. Isterhas-the poor; George Smalley-the beggar. The boss sent Jim Predo, the head of the "scalping team", to Hungary on a secret mission, saying that the general who joined him would tell him who was the "gopher" lurking inside the round field.
10. Before Jim Pledo performed his mission, he visited Bill Haydn.
11. Jim Pledo was on a mission in Hungary, but he was injured and taken prisoner.
12. On the night of Jim Pledo’s mission, the boss arranged Jerry Westerby as the duty officer and stayed in front of the telegraph machine. In the early morning, Jerry received a telegram from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing Hungarian news, and learned that Jim’s operation had failed. The boss was hit hard and didn’t say a word. Jerry reluctantly activated an emergency plan, contacted several other senior officials of the round field, and called Smiley’s home and learned that Smiley had not returned from Berlin. After that, Bill Haydn hurried over and claimed I learned the news on the newspaper reader of the club. After learning that Pledo was shot, he immediately notified the Hungarian Embassy, asking the other party not to endanger his life, and informing Toby Isterhas to seize all known Hungarian spies. Haydn and Jerry rushed to the home of Predo to clean up the traces. (Explanation for the above 4 items: From the time Percy Alleren started the "Witchcraft Project" to when the boss dispatched Jim Pledo to perform the mission, the time span was close to one year. This analysis cannot be known from the movie. , But by analyzing a few scattered information in the original work, this conclusion can be drawn)
13. In November 1973, the "scalping group" member Ricky Tal was ordered to go to Istanbul to counter the Soviet trade representative Boris, and he was received by the permanent residence. Istanbul intelligence agent Tafti Sissinger; Taer discovered Boris was actually a Soviet spy after several days of tracking. He decided that there was no hope of rebelling and informed the head of the "scalping team" Peter Gilliam to prepare to return to China. But before leaving, Tal went to contact Boris’s wife Elena, hoping to spy on some intelligence; the two fell in love with each other a few days later, Elena told Tal that she knew he was a British spy, and she He had information about the "gophers" inside Yuanchang. Tal sent the information back to Yuanchang. After waiting for a day, there was no real response. The reason was that Bill Haydn obtained this telegram and notified Kara through Polyakov. The Soviet delegation learned that it had brought Jelena back to the country and killed Tafti Sissinger; Tal absconded.
14. On November 14, 1973, the boss resigned because of the failure of Jim Pledo's operation. Smalley resigned with him. After leaving, Smalley went with those black-rimmed gradient glasses, the previous ones were golden spots. Alleran took the top spot in the round field and reorganized the round field. Bill Haydn became the head of the London station and his power was greatly increased. (Explanation of the above two items: In the original work, Tal went to Hong Kong in April of the following year. In the film, it was changed to go to Istanbul in November. It is impossible to define exactly how long Tal spent in Istanbul, but because he sent back a telegram It was detained by Bill Haydn, so it was inferred that the boss should resign at this time. Allerlain came to power, and Haydn took the post of station master of the London station. The approximate time should be mid-to-late November)
15. On November 28, 1973, there was a research group " Connie Shahes, known as the "Queen", was forced to retire on
16.1973.12.4, and Jerry Westby was expelled. With canned beer, the reason is not explained in the movie, and the original has an explanation)
17.1973.12, on Christmas Eve, the boss passed away in the hospital.
18. The winter of 1973-the spring of 1974, Jim Pledo was tortured in the Soviet Union, during which Kara participated in the interrogation. Kara was very concerned about which one the boss had tracked down, and killed Irina in front of Jim. In the spring of 74, Pledo was deported back to England. Toby Esterhas went to see him, gave him 1,000 pounds and a car, let him teach in an elementary school, and told him to forget everything, he was actually dead outside.
19.1974.10 Ricky Tal traveled to Paris and returned to England, contacted Lacan, the Chief Inspector of Intelligence Affairs, and asked him to find Gillham to confirm his identity. Tal informed Lacan that there was something in the round field he had learned through Irina. With the intelligence of the Gopher, Lacan realized that the situation was serious and asked Smalley to go out and investigate. Peter Gillham and Mendel became his assistants. (Note: It is impossible to know exactly when Tahl returned to China in the movie. There is indirect material in the original work to prove that he returned to China in October)
20. Smiley rented a hotel office, and went to the CEO’s office with Peter to find information. Ask Peter to go to Yuanchang to steal back the list of retirees after the boss and himself resigned.
21. Smalley visits Connie and learns about Polyakov, suspecting that he is a spy connected to the "gopher" in the round field.
22. Smalley analyzed the reptile fund and determined that Jim Pledo was not dead.
23. Ricky Tal infiltrates into Smiley's house and tells everything. Smly suspects that the so-called Ricky Tal's rebellion was framed. Smiley sent Peter to Yuanchang to steal the record of duty in November 1973, and found that the record of the day that Tal sent back the telegram was deleted. After Peter stole the materials, he met several high-ranking officials in Yuanchang. They asked him about Ricky Tal's problems. Peter felt that Tal was really rebellious and returned to the office of Smalley and found that Tal was there, right. Its a big fight. Smiley told Peter that Tal was framed.
24. Smiley talked with Tal at home, told about the encounter with Kara, and told Peter that the situation was dangerous and let him deal with the family affairs.
25. Peter Gillum went home and drove away his same-sex couple, feeling sad alone. (Explanation: This is a change that I find very strange. In the original book, Peter Gilliam was suave and has a good-looking girlfriend. For some reason, the taste was changed in the film. Later, I came across a comment. It started. Homosexuality in that era seemed to be very ostracized. Smalley told Peter that starting from today, you have to be monitored as yourself. If your homosexuality is discovered, then it is very likely that Peter’s work will be endangered. That’s why. Setting, I have to say that this is very clever)
26. Smalley and Peter visited Jerry Westerby and learned of Jim’s injury on the night of the round. Smalley inferred that Haydn was at his home that night. Cheating. And recalled a time when he ran into Haydn's clothes when he went home, Haydn said that he was just passing by.
27. Smalley found Jim Pledo, learned about his interrogation, and learned that after he was caught, Kara already knew that the boss was looking for the "gopher", and more importantly, Small Lee learned that Toby Easthas had come to make Jim
Prado "forget everything" 28. Smiley returned to London, and then one day suddenly figured out the nature of the so-called "Witchcraft Project", and immediately contacted him The Secretary of Defense met with Lacan and informed them that the "Witchcraft Project" was actually designed to defraud Americans of intelligence.
29. Smiley intimidated Toby Isterhass and concluded through conversation that he was just a messenger, and finally learned where they met Polyakov.
30. Smiley arranged for Ricky Tal to go to Paris to hold the Paris station master and send back information, falsely claiming that he had important information about ghosts in the round field.
31. Allerlain, Haydn, and Brand arrived at the round room to discuss countermeasures, but the real "gopher" will definitely come to see the "witch" Polyakov, so Smiley and Peter set up an ambush at the junction , Finally caught Bill Haydn.
32. Alleline takes an indefinite vacation (original original text), Smiley went to visit Bill Haydn, Haydn told part of the past.
33. Jim Pledo came to the place of detention and killed Bill Haydn. (Explanation: In the original book, Pledo followed Peter Gilliam and learned of Haydn’s detention location. He sneaked into it at night. Haydn went out for a walk at night, but Pledo broke his neck. Julio.Iglesias' La Mer melody sang the art and affection after the shooting.
34. Smalley returns to the round and cleans up the mess.
To say
something about it, it should be said that I became a barely qualified movie lover after I joined the group in 2009. In the past three years or so, there are very few movies that can make me devote myself to it, or even obsessed with it. And madness; "Under the Sky of Berlin" counts as one, and "The Potter, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" counts as one. There are probably several reasons why I like this film so much: First of all, I have a deep love and obsession with the subject of spy films. "The Potter" reminds me of the early "Snake" and "The Silent Man", the cold war. The cold tone of the period is really too much for me; secondly, the characterization is so good that the original work of Le Carré and the script adapted in person have created an extremely true feeling, spy Without the glamour in the fantasy, it turned out to be such a hard job. The story is not particularly complicated if the story is complex. The key is that the coloring of the characters is too in place. The paragraph that Smiley said to Kara:
We've both spent our lives, looking for the weaknesses in one another's systems.
Don't you think it's time to recognise there is as little worth on your side as there is on mine?
In our whole life, we want to find weaknesses in the other party's system.
Haven't you discovered that your own side is the same as mine, and there is nothing worth fighting for?
The overall tone of the film is cold and depressing. The scene where Tal and Irina talk about love is probably the only warm scene in the film; whether it is a lightly plucked string or an occasional melodious trumpet. , Are gently telling us that great spies like Smiley are gone, and the golden age of the British Empire is also gone. Even the Cold War that ended 20 years ago has been dusted by history. It was sealed; it was a cruel era, with a heavy iron curtain outside, and inside not only you fighting and me, but also this lurking gopher. There is no life, no family, no love, only the old man who has struggled for the so-called ideal all his life. In this era described by Le Carré, does he miss it or see him off? It’s not clear, all the answers are buried in the Christmas party, Bill Haydn’s only sincere smile on Jim Predo in the whole scene, and after he turned around, Predo’s thoughtful smile Look.
This film can be included in my TOP10 so far, and I can’t add to my love for him. Morpheus
