According to the American way of thinking, the TV series Sex and the City appeared. The director of the 99th edition of Mansfield Manor (MP) is also thinking about such a problem. Perhaps, he did not think about this problem at all, and directly made compromises with today's social thoughts. As a result, Fanny, who was weak and obedient to the point of being submissive in the original book, underwent a 180-degree change: she was active and unrestrained, and she didn't look like an 18th-century lady when chasing Edmund around; she was strong and self-reliant, and even made a career of writing books , quite the shadow of Jane Eyre and the legacy of Austen himself; concerned about politics, concerned about the human rights status of slaves, and preached equality. At this moment, what we see is not Fanny, but a contemporary woman standing at the forefront of the times.
Although MP is the most complex story in Austen's novels, the affectionate Darcy, everyone's two-dimensional empathy for rationality and emotion, and the radiant Emma, compared with the above, MP is lifeless Fanny and Edmund, who are dumbfounded, appear much bleak in comparison. When reading the original book, sometimes even Henry Crawford is the hero. If the original work is strictly followed, with such two protagonists, the audience will definitely not buy it. The director made this change to Fanny, but it was also unspeakable.
There are two places that I can't bear to change: the first place, the part of putting pigeons, I suspect that the director has watched too many Korean dramas; the second place, Fanny said yes to Henry, which is seriously inconsistent with the spirit of the original work, and the script is probably still submissive. For modern people's ideas: only by hitting Henry hard, Henry's fornication with Maria can make sense.
With the complexity of MP's plot, it is difficult to fully express it in a movie of less than two hours. For the development of the emotional line, it is inevitable that there are weaknesses: Fanny's attachment to Edmund and the kind of forbearance love , seeing Edmund's distressed and tangled state of mind when he was with Miss Crawford, was not enough.
Finally, let's talk about casting. Fanny looked a little old, with sagging cheeks. . . Miss Crawford made a good choice. When I read the original book, I thought she had a witch temperament, which was well expressed in the movie, although she was a little old. Justine Waddell, who I have always loved, did not have any outstanding performances at all, disappointed. .
All in all, for such a change, although I understand it, I don't really buy it. Perhaps, MP novels themselves are not popular, and it is really difficult for this slightly boring novel to be a classic.
