nude stage

The British comedy has a kind of light-heavy style, neither slow nor fast, neither light nor heavy, no matter what kind of burden, it can be handled with equanimity. Even telling jokes about the next three roads is almost like drinking afternoon tea.

This aspect is very different from Hollywood comedies. Hollywood people can't control their own burdens. If the burden is a little bigger, they will be higher than the audience.

The taste varies from person to person, and as far as I'm concerned, British comedy happens to be my thing.

"Mrs Henderson Presents" is based on a true story, telling the story of the Windmill Theatre, which had a huge influence in Britain in the 1930s and 1940s.

The two protagonists of the film, the wealthy and stubborn widow, are the bosses of Windmill, and the dogmatic and talented Jew is the manager of Windmill. Both of them have distinct personalities, they admire each other and are incompatible, and sparks are splashed under the collision.

Coupled with the special performance form of this theater, nude performances were added to the musical, and because of the conservative social atmosphere, the last permission was that the naked actors could not move on the stage, so the actors stood on the stage like art models. Bare and unmoved.

Interesting characters and interesting stories lay the framework for comedy. What's rare is that there are parts of the movie that involve nudity, and there are even scenes where many people are completely naked, but they are handled with care. It's also possible to use nudity to create a comedic element without the feeling of being coerced into laughing.

More difficult to deal with for a comedy like this is how to deepen the theme. A little careless fell into the quagmire of preaching. Many comedies simply choose to be nonsensical to the end, rather than far-fetched preaching.

"Mrs Henderson Presents" handles this very well. Although it is also a main theme film, she puts war and national justice in a lower position, highlights the power of human nature, and tells it in the form of a nude stage. The continuous bombers are still dropping bombs in the sky, but the underground theater is crowded with audiences watching the performances of naked beauties. No matter how difficult it is, they cannot stop them from enjoying the joy of life here. It may be superficial, but it makes people move and make people laugh.

Leslie Pearkes: This is Vivian Van Damm.

Laura Henderson: Don't be silly. That's not a British name.

Vivian Van Damm: In actual fact, my father's a lawyer in Bishopsgate, although some of his ancestors are from Holland.

Laura Henderson: Oh, dear God, you're Jewish!

Vivian Van Damm: As it happens, I'm not.

Laura Henderson: Well, of course you are, dear. Just look at yourself.

  • Vivian Van Damm: Mustn't keep the Millerettes waiting.

Laura Henderson: Oh, that name is intolerable. It suggests midgets working in a factory.

Vivian Van Damm: Millettes sounds like a medical condition.
