The film is about two French officers in the Napoleonic era who experienced 4 thrilling duels in 15 years. But every duel was unilaterally provoked by that Feraud, the stalker who was almost frantically trying to fight Hubert for a trivial matter. Hubert was reluctant every time, but every time he survived.
One reviewer said the essence of the film: the duelists are actually obsessed with the thrill of challenging death, and honor is just a guise. It was true for Feraud, who had been saved by Hubert, but that wasn't an excuse to avoid a duel. What's more, such a tenacious opponent is so rare. It's a bit like a Chinese martial arts novel, a madman who just wants to be invincible, and a helpless master who is always challenged.
Both protagonists are doing well. Harvey, who played Feraud, was already a fierce face in 1977!
