If you can start over

"Youth Without Youth" is a very interesting movie, and it's also a very personal movie. At Coppola's age, prestige, wealth, and praise should no longer matter, let alone have already been there.

If I could live again...everyone has probably made that assumption. Especially when you look back with your back against the gate of the tomb, you will have a completely different look at your entire life experience. This special perspective can only be given by time and cannot be artificially copied and borrowed.

I always thought that our understanding of "success" today was too one-sided and too narrow. Success is not only defined by what brand of clothes you wear, what price you drive, how many figures you have in the bank, and how many people you have to sign on the street. A successful life is when you can still say when you are getting old: If there is a chance to start over, I will still live like this. So if we're not worth mentioning at the end of our lives, then why should we work so hard to win the approval of others now?

But in reality, there is no such opportunity, so Ma Tai finally died on the streets of Christmas. The third rose that was finally found in his hand.

It took Coppola 124 minutes to tell the story, and it took me 124 minutes to listen. What I've heard is: what's the use of eternal life without love? If there is no love, what good is it to see all the mysteries of the world? With another person, Coppola's story could have a different meaning. Part of it depends on the storyteller, and part of it depends on the person listening to the story.

Dominic: I have no idea what you're talking about.

Josef Rudolf: An opportunity has been given to us. We... the human race!

  • Dominic: I am afraid, I must remain neutral in all of this...
