Brazil (1985)

This movie was downloaded very early. The first download was the RMVB version, which was around 2005. After downloading, I thought it was an American movie, so I didn't watch it. After watching "The Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Brian's Life" and "Twelve Monkeys", I realized that this film is a British film under the name of "Brazil". Therefore, I re-downloaded the 720P version in 2011 and prepared to take a look. Who knew that the director's cut version was released recently. Hey, I had to wash the plate again. Calculating carefully, the film was downloaded three times and it was only watched after nearly seven years. How bumpy!

The movie tells the story of a man at Christmas. The protagonist works in the Archives Department of the Ministry of Intelligence and often dreams of a woman in his dreams. The Intelligence Department caught the wrong person on Christmas Day, causing a lot of trouble to the actor's boss. In order to help the boss, the actor went to the home of the wrong person to do the aftermath, but unexpectedly found the woman in his dream. The actor immediately returned to the Intelligence Department to check the woman's information, but only the person from the Search Department had the authority. The actor had to agree to his mother's proposal and was promoted to work in the search department. With the help of a friend from the search division, the male protagonist got the woman's file. At the same time, the actor met the woman in the office building. After a tense confrontation with the soldier, the hero madly shows love to the woman, which makes the woman very confused. Subsequently, the actor was sent back to the search department because of a terrorist bombing. After returning home, the actor also found out that he was retaliated by the official plumber for letting a fugitive plumber repair the air conditioner-the house was expropriated and he had no place to live. When the actor was at a loss, the fugitive plumber helped the actor retaliate against the official plumber. At this time, the woman found the hero, and the two went to the hero's mother's house and hid. Afterwards, the actor used the name of the Deputy Minister of Intelligence to erase the woman's record and let the woman "die". The two thought they could be together happily, but the Intelligence Department quickly arrested the actor on various charges. In the end, the actor went crazy under the torture of the Deputy Minister of Intelligence and a good friend.

Before watching this movie, I had great expectations for it, but the movie was not as good as expected, so after watching it, I was also very disappointed in it. I thought that this movie would be like "Twelve Monkeys" to give me a considerable shock ideologically, logically, and scientifically, but I was wrong. This film is just a fantasy film with political metaphors, it is not even a science fiction film. In addition, the movie’s viewing quality is not good, the plot is loose, the structure is chaotic, and the movie looks very laborious. There are only two highlights in the film. One is its depiction of the highly centralized and bureaucratic social situation, and the other is the setting and depiction of the world's image style in the film.

The director's cut version is not short, with a duration of 142 minutes, but the whole film only tells three aspects of the story. The first story is the process of the male protagonist looking for a woman, and their actions against the intelligence department to catch the wrong person. The second story is about the maintenance of the air-conditioning of the hero and the dispute between the hero and the three plumbers. The third story is the plastic surgery of the protagonist's mother and his mother's friends. In these three stories, only the first two really serve the theme. In these two stories, we can see what the life of ordinary people looks like in a society where government departments are overwhelmed and highly centralized: there are rules and regulations for doing everything, there are detailed departments, and various forms need to be filled in to do things. , Even if you are a prisoner, you have to pay the government yourself! Similarly, repairing the air conditioner also has a cumbersome system, requiring various forms to be filled out. Because of this, even a plumber chose to be a "wanted criminal" in order to escape the paperwork! It can be seen that the society in the film has forced people into what they are. As for the third story told by the movie, it has nothing to do with the theme of the movie. Through the crazy plastic surgery of two women, what is shown is just the madness and extremes of society-women are even willing to sacrifice their bodies for the sake of youth! Of course, this also reflects the absurdity of the society in the film.

From the above three stories, we can see what the movie wants to show. The director used exaggerated, black, and absurd methods to shape a surreal world in which everyone is a slave to the system, even the makers and executors of the system are not immune. Everyone is bound by various systems, and these systems are bureaucratic and cumbersome. In such a society, everyone has no freedom, no dreams, no hope, and may even lose his life. For example, the wrong person, or the male protagonist who is not as good as dead. In short, the film implicitly satirizes the totalitarian society and bureaucracy through this "wonderful" story, and these are also metaphors for certain countries in the real world. After watching the video, I just want to sigh: Life is so beautiful now!

Another highlight of the film is the black, gloomy urban style in the film. The city in the film is extremely industrialized, with pipes, hazy skies, weird buildings, mechanical urban facilities, and urban environments without green plants everywhere. All this creates an apocalyptic image style, which appropriately sets off the theme of the movie-the world is hopeless, and there is no light. Through the information, we know that the style of the film has borrowed from German Expressionism, and it is indeed the case after careful observation. The style and interior decoration of the two office buildings of the Ministry of Information are the most prominent. They are just like replicas of the buildings in Metropolis. Looking back on the other films of the film’s director Terry Gilliam, I found that the film’s image style is his preference, and similar styles are more obvious in "Twelve Monkeys". In general, Terry Gilliam's unique personal style is very obvious in this film, and it is what impresses the audience the most.

As for the dreamland of the male protagonist that occupies a lot of space in the film, I don't understand it. In the weird dream of the hero, he fantasizes about the hero saving the beauty, but in the end he discovers that the biggest villain is himself! What do these scene directors want to show? Show the gloom of the actor's heart? Still want to express the hero's love for women? Or is this just a dream? In my opinion, the setting of this plot is unnecessary, it has nothing to do with the theme of the film, just like the plastic surgery of the protagonist's mother and his mother's friends, it is optional.

The film also has many shortcomings, such as abrupt plot, fast and slow rhythm, inconsistent theme, etc. For example, the redundant plots mentioned above are not necessary at all. They can neither deepen the theme nor increase the visibility of the story, and will disrupt the audience's understanding of the movie. Such redundant plots should be deleted. In addition, the story in the second half of the film is too unreasonable and out of touch with the front. For example, the hero suddenly tells a woman that I love you. How can a normal person suddenly confess? And the woman didn't object to it, and acquiesced to the male lead, which made the movie more difficult to understand. For example, how does a woman find the male protagonist's home? Why do women want to sleep with the hero? These are for no reason. Looking at these sudden episodes, it made me more depressed the more I watched it. The plot is too bullshit! Could this be a "good" movie with excellent reviews online? Hey, I think this film is too good for people to taste really bad! In any case, this film is only half a good movie. When the actor comes out of a friend's office, the rest of the film is unreasonable.

I won’t say much about filming, I have already praised a lot. Because the most prominent feature of this film is the picture and style of the movie. These are all the contributions of the design of costumes, sets, props, and scenes. Without perfect links, this aspect would not be so good. Movie music is relatively ordinary, and it didn't impress me too much.

The actors are equally ordinary. The male protagonist Jonathan Pryce looks mediocre, and his performance is quite satisfactory. It is not very difficult to perform such a crazy role as the male protagonist in this film, and he did not impress me too much. The heroine Kim Greist is beautiful, especially when she has long hair, too beautiful! Called a blonde stunner. But I heard that the director of the film, Terry Gilliam, didn't wait to see her and deleted a lot of her scenes. What a pity. Kim Greist hasn't become popular either, and she rarely sees the movies she starred in. Hollywood is really a waste of beautiful women. How many beautiful women are old before they are famous? Everyone else is just a trick, not to mention it.

in conclusion. This is a political metaphor like "V for Vendetta", only twenty years earlier than it. In addition to the amazing worldview and pictures, other aspects of the movie are mediocre, and it can even be said that it is terrible. It seems that Terry Gilliam is still in the growth stage, and he only made a truly outstanding movie-"Twelve Monkeys" ten years later.
