The film mainly tells the love story of two elderly men and women. The story begins one night with an abrupt knock on the door.
Old Louis pulled out his chair, put down his plate, finished his dinner quietly, washed his fork, turned on the too-old spherical TV, switched to the weather forecast, and finally picked up the newspaper to fill out the afternoon crossword. Another dull, lonely night, the din of the TV in the empty room, repeated for twenty years.
until there was a knock on the door. An unfamiliar woman stood outside the door, looking about the same age as old Louis. However, the entire community is filled with people his age.
Addie wears a floral T-shirt and high-waisted jeans, and her hair is neatly pulled back, but her gray hair and saggy skin betray her age. Her expression was restrained, but the question she asked was bold and unrestrained: Would you like to come to my house to sleep with me occasionally? No sex, just whispers. Old Louis finally agreed. They were all tired of the lonely moments of lying in bed watching the sky brighten.
Louis began to pack his clothes and slippers in a paper bag every night, tidied up his neckline before going out on a date when he was young, and walked to Addie's house. He kept dodging the eyes of his neighbors, avoiding the crowd, and knocking on Addie's back door.
The first embarrassment and reticence did not stop the two from continuing their plan. In the process of getting along and getting to know each other slowly, the small double bed in Addie's house has become a solid bridge connecting the hearts of the two. Louis confessed that he had been unfaithful to the family and thought he fell in love with a foreign woman, so he abandoned his wife and children and went away with her and her daughter. A few weeks later, he realized his inexplicable and stupid, and returned to the family, but this has already been done. It caused deep psychological damage to his daughter, and his wife died of depression many years later, and the relationship could not be resumed.
At the age of 11, Addie's eldest daughter was killed in a car accident due to her neglect. She was saddened by the loss of her beloved daughter, and her relationship with her husband and younger son collapsed. Both are living in the scars of the past, trying to mend them, but in the end they are powerless. On a certain night, they were relatively whispering, and Eddie reassured Louis that some things couldn't be fixed, so learn to forgive yourself.
Because everyone has a past. No one is a saint. Because it was difficult to endure the loneliness of the night, the two approached; and because of the clarity and understanding after approaching, they fell in love as expected.
But the people of the small town are terrifying. The news that Louis often stayed at Eddie's house spread like wildfire. When Louis pretended to calmly return to the cafe to have coffee with those old friends to catch up with the old days, he was angered by the phrase "so old and so energetic" and a group of laughter. Embarrassed. He went back to Eddie's house to tell his knowledge and anger, and Eddie raised his brows with the sentence "We know that this matter will be known to others sooner or later, and we care about what others think and do".
Eddie didn't let Louis enter through the back door, but entered from the front door openly during the day. Louis never couldn't stand the ridicule and jokes of his old friends, to go to the restaurant in town with Eddie arm in arm for dinner, from leaving the old one because of gossip. Social circle to face it calmly
Aidi's youngest son temporarily handed over his son to his mother's care due to many troubles in career and relationship. Therefore, the picture of two old people living with five or six-year-old children has become a retrospective of their past lives. Louis played with Jamie with a train toy he bought for his daughter in the early years; they adopted a dog, and Jamie named him Bonnie.
They also booked high-end hotels in Denver, dressed brightly, hugged and danced on the dance floor, and went back to the room to play and linger. Just when they thought life was going to be wonderful, the emotional estrangement between Addie and her younger son many years ago manifested and erupted. In order to mend her relationship with her son, Eddie reluctantly left Louis and moved to live with her son and grandchildren.
Another long absence alone.
Louis returned to his previous state of life, but he always looked at the half of the bed beside him thoughtfully when he was alone. He put his lover's thoughts into a package, which contained the assembled train they used to play with the children together, and an iPhone. At the end of the film, no matter how far away two people are geographically so that they cannot be together at night, a phone call in the middle of the night is enough. Regardless of the content of the conversation, these two souls are always connected to each other.
