Jodorowsky's sand dunes, a mirage among the sand dunes.
Because of the release of the new film, this documentary became a small fire. The assistant director, who is nearly 90 years old, is holding a brick-like thick storyboard to describe his previous ideas, which is quite like the old woman's words.
This month is the auction season for rare books in Europe and the United States. Taking advantage of the release of the new version of "Dune", Christie's Paris has released a storyboard of Jodorowsky's "Dune". with the manuscript.
This book is octave-sized, single-sided, and includes English and French screenplays, 11 color illustrations, and 268 pages of black and white storyboards, directed by the Dune Dream Team: artist Chris Foss, comic book master Moebius and Diablo Drawing by the master and the father of aliens, HR Giger. Images released by Christie's give a glimpse.
Sao was the first filmmaker to discover Moebius' talent. Although "Dune" was not completed, the cooperation between the two began, and the six volumes "Stones of the Incas" co-authored between 1980 and 1988 became famous. Moebius went on to work on bigger films, such as Star Wars, Alien and The Fifth Element.
The addition of HRGiger is Dali's introduction. The director persuaded Dali to play the emperor with a super high salary of $100,000 per minute. Dali showed him Giger's portfolio, and Sao asked Giger to design the castle of the villain, Baron Hakunan. Baron Hakunan was played by Orson Welles, who was known as "Roshan" at the time.
Regarding the version and print number of the storyboard, even the filmmakers are not very clear. In the preparatory stage of the 1970s, several films were printed, most of which were bound in sky blue cloth. Except for the director's book kept by the director, the rest were scattered in the hands of the French producer Caméra One for investment promotion. For more than 30 years, these storyboards have been released one after another, and this one at Christie's ten days later is number five. It is the only numbered one on the market at present, the condition is very good, and the cloth surface is slightly faded. Another, with a slightly looser spine, sold for $42,500 at Heritage Auctions in Texas two years ago.
Buyers of the year are now willing to sell, asking no less than $63,750. The biggest regret of this book is that there is no cover, that is, the iconic pink battleship poster of the "Dune" version ▼
At the end of the 1980s, because the project was completely in vain, the producer printed four copies of the storyboards as a souvenir to the two collaborators of Dao Dao, Mobis and Mo. These four books are unified in dark red leather with gold fonts. A few years ago, a copy was sold on a small auction, and the price could not be found.
Other than these two, it is unclear whether there are other printed records of the Zuo version of "Dune". So when an illustrated script for Dune popped out of nowhere a few years ago, fans of books and movies alike were thrilled.
In March 2015, a copy of Jodorowsky's "Dune" popped up at Eaby's last record store in Southern California. With a large number of color pictures, the style is unique. It is neither the style of Mobius nor the handwriting of HRGiger, but it fits the original and does not look like an imitation. There are many opinions for a while.
According to the store owner, one day he received an anonymous phone call. The other party said that he had a rare book for sale, but he refused to reveal the details and refused to meet in the store. The owner wanted to refuse, but made an appointment in the parking lot. After the meeting, the other party took out an inconspicuous black leather brochure and opened it to see that it was the script of "Dune" and dozens of illustrations that had never been published before.
▲ The illustrations in the book are all lithography, and they are indeed products of the 1970s after testing. The character image is also consistent with the design of the assistant director, such as the emperor's two-stroke beard obviously copied from Dali. ©Grady's Record Refuge
The scenes depicted in the illustrations are very dark but true to the original. For example, the mantis-shaped arch and the entrance to the palace in the shape of a female vagina, and the scene of the nobles' wine pool and meat forest after smoking spices. And what appears to be a new setting for the movie - soldier "Dog-beings".
Some fans speculated that this was drawn by Jodorowsky himself, because in the 1960s and 1970s, the director has always created comics, and there are indeed similarities in style and color. The picture below is a cartoon published by Sao Director in 1968.
Based on this conjecture, someone contacted the director of the film, Pavic, who said it was very similar, but it was definitely not the work of the director. The unwilling fans asked the director directly on Twitter, and the answer was "Fake, imitation!"
Because of the veto of the director himself, this magical script was only sold for $6,500, but the curiosity of movie fans and book fans was not satisfied. There are still quite a few people who think it has something to do with the "Dune" movie, and this connection was later proved by the director himself.
In the summer of 2018, Zodiac raised funds for the movie "Psychological Magic, The Art of Healing" on the crowdfunding website Ulule, and released a batch of movie props, including a limited copy of the script of "Dune".
Some fans bought a page-by-page comparison of the short-lived illustrated book three years ago, and found that most of the lines are the same, and even the illustrated book is more comprehensive, because the version released by the director has deleted a lot of erotic content and the prostitution after smoking spices. _ Messy scene. In other words, the illustrations are not imitations, but no one can tell why the assistant director denied it back then, and what kind of artist drew it.
Finally, put the most complete collection of storyboards of Jodorowsky's version of "Dune", and wait and see the results of Christie's sales ten days later.
