Travis Oil Scientist Jim Dowd and owner Burke are distressed because the drilling has never yielded oil; the detectors show that there is water in the depths of the drilling, presumably there will be an ecosystem. But morality dictates to keep drilling. As a result, three octopus-shaped monsters emerge, catch two large ones, and run off a small one; Jack warns Burke not to leak the news because animal protection laws could shut the company down.

High school student Trip has always dreamed of having an off-road vehicle, living with his stepfather, Rick, a police officer, and his family is not rich enough to afford it; his father, Wade, works in the oil field. Tripp works at an abandoned car depot in his spare time, owned by a wheelchair-bound Weathers.

Tripp assembles a car, but has no engine; finds an octopus-shaped monster in the oil barrel area at night, and drinks oil for a living. The monster was almost crushed by a hydraulic press when he stole the oil from the barrel, but was rescued by Tripp, and the monster became Tripp's friend, and Tripp named him Creech.

When Burke came looking for the monster, the monster hid under the hood of Tripp's assembled car, replaced it with Tripp's engine, and drove Tripp around.

Learn the origin of the monster by asking Wade. Moral studied two large monsters and discovered that not only did they like to drink oil, but they also had collective intelligence--synchronized skills. So Critch knew that his parents were trapped in the headquarters of the oil company and went to rescue them alone. Burke wanted to kill the monster, and with the help of morality, he rescued the Creech family of three. Trip also made three special monster trucks to destroy the Burke company.
