1 The story of Ten Days of Crisis, the
famous writer Paul completed a new novel and happily rushed back to New York. However, he encountered a snowstorm on the way and the car rolled off the road. Paul's life or death is uncertain. Anne appeared. She rescued Paul alone and put him in a house on the farm. At first, she was amiable and healed him. Annie claims to be Paul's number one fan and loves his "Misery" series the most. The writer anxiously awaited news from the outside world amidst his injuries. Annie had already planned. She has been paying attention to Paul, so it is not accidental that Paul was rescued. Annie does not want the outside world to know the whereabouts of Paul, she wants to possess the Paul she loves. Gradually, Annie's behavior became abnormal. First, after reading Paul's latest manuscript, she was dissatisfied and furious. Later, Annie was furious because Paul ended the life of Misery in the novel. She forced Paul to burn the manuscript, rewrite the ending, and broke Paul's leg bones to prevent him from running away. Later, the story unfolded layer by layer. Annie had been in jail because she had abused and killed a baby before. After the old police came after the door, she shot him again. And when she knew that Paul's imprisonment would be known and she could not be with Paul, she became murderous again. At the end of the story, Paul and the manic lunatic Annie had a fight, and finally escaped from the tiger's mouth.
2 From a psychological point of view, this tragic
depression
Manic depression is a mental illness with excessively high or low emotional activity as the basic symptom, and its clinical features are the recurrence of unipolar or biphasic episodes of manic or depressive states , There is only a manifestation of affective disorder, either high or low, which is called monophasic; and when the symptoms of mania and depression appear one after another, it is called biphasic. (Wang Ling, 2005)
Annie is a patient with bipolar depression. During the episode of mania, she showed the symptoms of three highs, that is, high mood, rush of thoughts, and increased volitional behavior. Anne has a lot of mania. The first time she appeared in the film was when she was dissatisfied after reading Paul's first draft. She couldn't help but changed her kind attitude. She tanned at Paul, her face rose in an instant, her tone of voice rose. It also increased sharply by an octave. Afterwards, mania broke out under stimulation many times. The strong and high emotions affected Anne’s judgment, leading to excessive self-evaluation, and some exaggerated delusions, such as thinking that she was sent by God to guide Paul, thinking that she was herself Of course become a character in Paul's work. During the onset of depression, Annie showed a three-low state, that is, depression, slow thinking, and slow movements. In the film, whenever it rains, it is when Anne has a depression. At this time, Annie appeared pessimistic, listless, melancholy and depressed, thinking that Paul would abandon her, and tended to kill and commit suicide. Therefore, on rainy nights, Paul appeared nervous and concealed a sharp knife for self-defense. During the periods of mania and depression, there are obvious intermittent periods. During this period, Anne's mental state is completely normal, and the forbidden Paul is taken care of in every possible way.
2.1.1 Cause analysis
The etiology and pathogenesis of manic depression are still unclear. Biology, neuroscience, psychology, and sociology provide analysis from different aspects. Manic depression is the result of many pathological factors intertwined. Including biological factors and psychosocial factors. Biological factors include genetic factors and neurobiochemical factors. Psychosocial factors include life events and so on. (Wang Ling, 2005) In addition, depression often has a bad personality basis.
2.1.1.1 Borderline personality disorder
Borderline personality disorder is a common personality disorder in psychiatry. It is mainly characterized by unstable emotions, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior, and is accompanied by a variety of impulsive behaviors. It is a complex and serious Mental disorder usually manifests as a destructive mental state. According to the definition of the latest version of "DSM-IV-TR", the main symptoms of borderline personality disorder are as follows:
1. Work hard to avoid real or imagined abandonment.
2. An unstable and tense interpersonal relationship model characterized by a shift between the extremes of over-idealization and denial of its value.
3. Identification disorder: Self image or sense of self continues to be significantly unstable.
4. Impulsive behaviors that may lead to self-harm in at least two aspects.
5. Repeated suicidal behaviors, gestures, threats, or self-harm behavior.
6. Due to excessive mood and easy reaction, emotional performance is unstable.
7. Feeling empty for a long time.
8. Unsuitable and strong anger, or difficult to control anger.
Borderline personality disorder not only destroys many aspects of a person's life, but also causes some mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and so on.
It can be seen from the film that Annie is not only a manic-depressive patient, but also a borderline personality disorder patient. First of all, she appears as a disordered self-identity, thinking that she is the candidate sent by God to guide Paul. Secondly, Annie's mood is unstable and changes rapidly, she has strong anxiety, is prone to anger and excitement. Annie is very explosive and easily irritated. Once she changes her face, she can even do harm to the Paul she loves. Once again, Annie has significant separation anxiety. She is extremely sensitive to abandonment and separation, and even avoids the separation scene by putting Paul under house arrest. In order to avoid the Dongchuang incident, she is even full of hostility and vigilance towards the police on the road. In the end, Annie appeared impulsive. The common ones are anger, destruction, fighting, and cursing against Paul.
2.1.1.2 Life background
Freud said that mental illness has its roots in early bad childhood experiences. In the film, there is not much mention of Annie's childhood. But in the booklet "Reminiscences of the Past", some things about Annie are recorded. The first is that Anne’s husband, investment banker Vekar, jumped off the building and died. Followed by the top nurse students fell to death. Then Anne was arrested on suspicion of successive infanticides, although she kept shouting innocent. In these incidents, perhaps the widowhood's blow is greatly related to the onset of Anne's depression.
Dating back to the background of the times in the film. This film is a 1990 film. In the film, the high-rise buildings behind the publisher's floor-to-ceiling windows, the information materials plastered behind the sheriff's desk, and the comparison between Anne's home cut off by the snowstorm, all hint at Anne's isolation and oppression of loneliness. This is the suppression of modernization on people. Annie suffers from the loss of her husband. Because of her remote home, she has not been able to get good social support. She has been stuck in a state of sadness and depression for a long time, which leads to depression. Before Annie became the head nurse, it could be inferred that this road was not easy. And the top nurse student fell to death. Although there is no reason in the film, it must have something to do with Annie. Then came several cases of infant abuse, and then Anne went to jail as a "devil nurse". It can be seen that Annie is a person with a sinful past. Her life has experienced a lot of life and death, which paved the way for the subsequent depression and mania.
