Cowardice is the fear of freedom

"Every sane person has more or less longed for the death of the one he loves," Camus said in "The Stranger".

In the second half of the film, [a psychiatrist from the United States] said that Juliet actually longed to leave her husband. Juliet was shocked and puzzled, and Camus's words immediately came to my mind.

The nature of human beings is both selfish and mean. Whether it is out of possessiveness or a desire for freedom, even those they love will have such dark thoughts to some extent. Juliet is no exception. And the reason why she is so miserable is because she likes misery.

If a person has been unhappy, it is because he does not want to be happy.

I really hate Juliet in my life. Most of them are polite and hypocritical, friendly and cowardly, pitiful and hateful.

In the middle, the medium asked Juliet, "To be honest, do you think I am beautiful?"

Juliet replied "Of course! You are so beautiful~"

I vomited...

It is understandable that Juliet was afraid that the other party would be unhappy, that she would be attacked, etc., but she did not dare to resist at all in such a high-pressure situation, until she was almost in a coma at the end, so she said, "I'm sorry, I have to go back." I have a deeper understanding of why cults have a living soil.

The film's presentation of cults (astrology, etc. I collectively refer to them as cults) is also very interesting, but I believe that among many viewers, there will be some people watching this episode not from a critical perspective, but from awe and learning.

In the apple part, Juliet was originally from the audience's perspective: isn't this an apple? Later, I became more and more convinced, and the more I believed, the more I became more and more obsessed. Let me dissipate the few pity I had for her in the previous paragraph, replaced by the anger that hates iron.

Regarding these metaphysics, at the beginning of the psychic night on the wedding anniversary, the magician said: "Trust me, astrology is a science!" Nee viewed astrology with a sarcastic stance.

Similarly, Woody Allen mocked astrology in his "Husband Wife Lover": "Did you know that only my nanny would believe in this?"

A thing that is at least outdated and despised in the West for half a century, but is regarded as a standard in China. The highly educated intellectuals have long constellations and short constellations. Every time I hear this topic, it makes me feel on pins and needles. Going up and saying "The constellation is nonsense..." Instead, it will be labeled as a weirdo, a straight man with cancer and an orphan, which is really absurd.

I don't know if Fellini is an existentialist or not, but the film has a very strong temperament. For me, who just entered the Camus pit, it is really a good idea.

"The future means nothing to me." "Yes, you only care about how you feel now."

"I'm telling you, having more sex is the right thing to do."

Many characters have similar lines, but the heroine who believes in retribution and the afterlife is not praised. The film's position is already obvious.

In the film class in college, the teacher made enough introductions and recommendations to Fellini. I am ashamed to see the master's work after 4 years, and this "Juliet and the Devil" is not a masterpiece.

As mentioned by other film critics, this film full of surreal elements and unique expression techniques really has the temperament of Woody Allen's work (or should be said the other way around), but the whole is far better than Woody Allen's " Films such as Love and Death are far more serious and spiritually heavier than Allen's cynicism that permeates all over. But overall, the story is simple and the characters are simple.

I often say that studying art has brought me a lot, including prompts for communication skills, liberation of nature, and a sense of questioning authority.

If a thing is indisputable, it is not right.

At the end of the film, Juliet repeatedly saw herself staring at being burned at the stake. I felt that not only did she express that she betrayed God and would be burned at the stake, but also that her gradually awakened personal will betrayed her previous cowardly self, so she felt guilty. Only then did I feel that I was staring at him hatefully.

There is also a little detail, I think the husband in the film is not really in love with the model girl, nor will he abandon the family for her at all - even if Juliet is really unattractive and doesn't even need her to serve (he is about to have an affair on his honeymoon) I packed my luggage by myself, and the servants do the usual meals. I think this is not the same as in "Deadly Woman"),

So the question is, he is in love with the model girl (on the surface), and he said to the yellow-faced woman at home, "I and she are just friends", what is the purpose? There is only one answer, and that is that he is a scumbag who only wants to "every sane person, more or less, has hoped that the person he loves will die", who dares to cheat and dare not divorce.

I think of Woody Allen's "Match Point" here.

【Spoiler Warning】

The male protagonist did not dare to establish a relationship with the cheating woman (is that Scarlett?? Does she have eyes??), but that is because the male protagonist needs his wife's property and seeks complete wealth, which is not the same as Juliet's husband. , from this angle, it can also be seen that the character depiction of "Juliet and the Devil" is indeed a little flat, and too much space is devoted to surreal performance.

【End of spoiler】

Stay real, treating people truthfully, is simple to say, but most people dare not even face their own hearts, let alone force others, so they live falsely and imprisoned all their lives.

The second time I came to the Film Archive, the audience was really big. The girl sitting next to me slept and slept again. I think with so many people present, she was not the only one who thought the film was boring and hypnotizing. It’s a pity.

Every time I watch a movie, it is a process of enjoyment and education at the same time. It was a pity to sleep.

Juliet of the Spirits quotes

  • Bhisma: Giulietta, do you know the Kama Sutra? Sexual intercourse is a conflict. To be happy, you must behave as if in combat. The place to be fought over is the body.

    Giulietta Boldrini: The body?

Bhisma: And within the body, the shoulders and between the breasts.

  • Bhisma: Love is a religion, Giulietta. Your husband is your god. You are the priestess of this cult. Your spirit must burn up like this incense, go up in smoke, on the alter of your loving body.
