crime and punishment

Not a movie review. Just thought of Gibran's article again, pure sharing, you can feel it yourself.

Written by Cary Gibran, translated by Lin Zhihao from The Prophet, Tianjin Education Press, 2007.

A city judge stood up and said: Please tell us about crime and punishment. He replied: When your souls are tossing in the wind, you alone and careless are very easy to make mistakes with others and yourself. Because of the mistakes you have made, you must knock on the door to receive good fortune, be left in the cold, and wait for a while. Your divinity is like the ocean, never to be desecrated. And like the sky, it only accommodates those who stretch their wings and fly high. Your divinity is even like the sun, and you do not know the way of the mole, and do not search for the snake's burrow. But your divinity does not dwell in you alone - in you is mostly human, and many inhumans, but an unformed dwarf, sleepwalking in the mists, looking for his own lucidity. I now want to speak of the humanity in you, for it is the only one who knows sin and punishment, not your divinity, nor the dwarf in the mist. I often hear you talk about someone who has made a certain mistake, as if he was not one of you, but a stranger who had broken into your world. Yet I will say that even the holy and righteous cannot surpass the highest good in each of you, nor can even the wicked and weak be lower than the highest evil in you. Like a lone leaf, it cannot wither and turn yellow without the acquiescence of the tree, and the sinner cannot do evil without the acquiescence of all of you. You are like a team marching toward the "divine side" of human beings. You are a smooth road and passers-by. If one of them falls, he falls for those behind, let them be careful to avoid stumbling stones. He also stumbled for those in front, who, although swift and steady, did not remove the stumbling block. Also, this may sound heavy to your heart: the victim cannot escape the blame for his murder, and the robbed cannot escape the blame for his robbery. The upright are not indifferent to evil deeds, nor are innocents innocent of the crimes of the tyrannical. Yes, the perpetrator is often the scapegoat for the victim, and more often, the guilty bears the burden of the innocent and blameless. You cannot distinguish between good and evil, because they coexist in the sun, as if black and white threads are woven together. As soon as the black thread is broken, the weaver should check the whole cloth, and should also look at the shovel. If any of you will bring an unfaithful wife to court, let him also measure her husband's heart with a scale, and his soul with a ruler. Let those who want to flog the perpetrator penetrate deep into the soul of the victim. If any of you will cut down a tree of evil in the name of righteousness, let him look at the foundation of that tree; He will surely discover that the roots of good and evil, the roots of fruit and the roots of infertility are all entangled in the quiet heart of the earth. What will you judges, judges who want to do justice, to judge those who are honest on the surface but hide evil intentions? How will you prosecute those who have been victimized? How will you punish those who repent more than they have done wrong? Isn't the justice that the law you believe in seeks to bring about repentance? But you cannot impose repentance on the innocent , nor can it be taken out of the criminal's mind. At midnight it comes uninvited and calls out: people will wake up and examine themselves. And those of you who will understand justice, how can you understand justice if you don't see things clearly in the clear sky and the sun? Only then will you understand that the one who stands and the one who falls are but the same person, the dark side of his dwarf and his body For the divine sunny side fused into one. You will understand: the side stone of the temple is no nobler than the stone in the foundation.
