early epics by david lean

The more David Lean films are watched, the more interesting the director becomes. That is being able to bend and stretch. Although he is known for grand epics like Lawrence of Arabia, I prefer his "smaller" films. Especially seeing each other late, I think it is one of the greatest romance films I have ever seen. While Great Expectations doesn't quite reach the heights of seeing each other late, the film is also extremely entertaining and elegant, and it's worth watching. The best part of this film is the art design and photography, at the beginning of the film, the protagonist walks to the river with his father. The shadows and high-angle photography of that lens are very shocking and epic. And the appearance of the gothic old lady is also very interesting. This film is a little darker than I thought. When pip met the old lady for the first time, the old lady's house was covered with spider webs, and the bridal cake also crawled with insects. It is indeed a design with a strong personal style. . This film has two shortcomings. First, the ending of the story is a bit cliché (but it is also very interesting), which makes the film fail to take a step closer in depth, but considering the era of the film's release, it is indeed excusable. Casting mistakes are almost unforgivable. Why let an actor in his thirties or forties play a guy in his early twenties? Overall, Great Expectations is one of the most interesting and unique adaptations of a classic of all time. Not perfect, but very interesting.

Great Expectations quotes

  • Pip: Why are you going to Richmond, Estella?

Estella: I am going to live, at a great expense, with a lady there who has the power or so she has of taking me about and introducing me, and showing people to me, and showing me to people.

    [sipping tea]

Pip: You'll have a gay time and be much admired. You must look forward to that, Estella.

Estella: It's part of Miss Havisham's plan for me, Pip. I shan't take any great pleasure in events which I don't shape, but I shall be beautiful and I shall be gay, I shall be obedient and I shall write regularly of my gaiety.

Pip: Will you always be part of Miss Havisham's plan, Estella?

  • Estella: Moths and all sorts of ugly creatures hover about a lighted candle. Can the candle help it?
