This may be the earliest documentary-like film I have ever seen, and the story in the film is probably just the tip of the iceberg of the entire city.

Synopsis
The story takes place in New York in the 1940s, and a model dies at home.
After a forensic examination, the cause of death was drowning in a bathtub after being anesthetized by drugs. From the traces of struggle, it was obviously homicide.
Detective Dan and assistant Jimmy are dispatched to investigate the case.
By asking the maid, the two learned that the deceased did not have much social activities before his death.
However, he has a close relationship with two male friends, one named Henderson and the other Frank.
In addition, the deceased also possessed a large amount of jewelry, but it was not found at the scene.
Dan decides to start her investigation with two of her male friends.
But after looking around, only Frank was found, but Henderson was nowhere to be found.
Frank claimed to be a veteran, and the deceased was just a common friend.
But the police unexpectedly discovered that Frank's fiancée and the deceased had worked together.
That is to say, there may be some mysterious triangular relationship between the three of them.
After further investigation, Dan discovers that Frank has been lying, that he is not a soldier at all, and that he had a bad track record in college.
But he couldn't be the murderer, because he had an alibi when the deceased was killed.
The clue was interrupted, but this time another body was found in the nearby river.
The deceased was a male, and the time of death was a few hours away from the previous model...
Video Analysis
The so-called "city that never sleeps" is also another name for New York City in the United States. As the name suggests, this is a story about what happened in New York. At the same time, this film is also very "special". The process of the film contains a lot of narration from the producer Mark Hellinger. It is like introducing us to New York in that era, and sometimes we even associate it with the characters in the film. The dialogue is mixed up, but the sound is really nice.
The story told in the film can't even be described as "uncomplicated" because it is too simple: a murder case, two detectives investigate and find the real murderer after a few days. There are no big conspiracies, big secrets, or even thrilling except for the tracking scene before the end, but even such a seemingly "mediocre" movie made me watch it with relish.
Because this film was one of the few at that time that did not build a studio and was shot on location. Maybe the theme itself is "city that never sleeps", so the producer wants to let us know more about this city. We can see a lot of people, life, scenery, etc. in New York City in the process of following the police detectives to determine the case. These may be more than crime cases. itself is more interesting.
This feeling brought me to the old Chinese film "The 405 Murder Case". The same case itself is nothing special, but the depiction of that era in China is very attractive. The same is true of "The City That Never Sleeps", we can see the bustling New York during the day and the silence at night, as well as the rush of adults and the frolic of children, the whole city has a panoramic view.
Going back to the film itself, there are not many things that left a deep impression on me. My favorite character is the tall and handsome detective Jimmy. The plot that attracts me the most is naturally the few "thrilling" scenes at the end of the film. In short, if you want to sit down and enjoy an old black and white film after a meal, you can try this "City That Never Sleeps", although it is a suspense film, it is not brain-burning, and it is a bit playful, it is more like a documentary Movie.
There is no such thing as a small liar or a big liar in this world. As for interests, liars have no bottom line.
