The loneliness we want to talk about

In my impression, movies from countries such as Israel and Iraq always smell like gunpowder smoke. Even if they don’t describe politics and war positively, they must still show the riddled holes in life. So when I learned that the winner of this year's Tokyo Film Festival Golden Unicorn Award was an Israeli film, I thought it was another heavy "scar image".

Who knows not. This film called "The Band Visits" completely abandoned the political, national, and historical pathos, and created a fresh and simple piece just from the feelings of life.

The story begins when an Egyptian police band is invited to perform in Israel. Seven or eight people in neat blue uniforms appear together. No one picks up when they leave the station. They find their way and get lost. So each has a different experience. This kind of life episode is not a new idea, but the unique coldness and forbearance shown in this film can't help but feel.

Assuming that the existing grand narrative is used as a clue, just the encounter between the two countries of Egypt and Israel, I don't know how many grudges will be drawn. However, this film deliberately does not emphasize these factors, and only works hard in the common emotions of human beings, so that every viewer can feel the endless loneliness of individuals in such a large space.

The coquettish middle-aged proprietress took a fancy to the dull band conductor, and wanted to have a romantic love, but the other party refused all explicit hints with her silence and restraint; young band members are romantic by nature, but all beautiful women want to strike up a conversation, but he fails to succeed. , but on the ice skating rink, he taught the young Israeli boys to experience sweet love; the man who often quarreled with his wife brought several band members home for the night without consent. The embarrassment at the dinner table can be imagined. In the air, he resonated with the Egyptian band member who always had trouble thinking about the ending of a song: maybe it could end like this, just the kind of...sudden ending, no sadness, no joy, just such a small room , a lamp, a bed, a sleeping baby, and... endless loneliness.

What moved me the most was the traditional bandleader, whose face was carved out of time, and every wrinkle contained deep grief and vicissitudes. He spoke politely and solemnly. He didn't even take off his hat easily, and everything seemed old-fashioned. Facing the beautiful woman who was obviously interested in him, he felt more restrained, and his eyes couldn't help but dodge. However, in the intermittent dialogue with a taste of loneliness, he revealed his hidden sadness: his son committed suicide because of his incomprehension, and his wife was unhappy and died soon after. Only then did you realize that his slightly aged body and unsmiling face contained a heaviness that others could not bear.

I guess he was tempted after the woman expressed her feelings with self-pity. For the first time, he took the initiative to express his feelings and said, "You are a good woman." Tears filled her face, and she had a gratified smile on her face. When something was about to happen between the eyes, the young Merry team member came back, and everything was interrupted and returned to its original position. He regained his dignity and restraint and went to bed early. I woke up in the middle of the night, only to find that a young man and a woman were having intense sex behind the half-closed door. How vicissitudes of life his face was at that time, those eyes full of sighs and helpless wrinkles made people feel so distressed that they wanted to cry.

When the emotion was at its most intense, the bandleader remained silent, turned around and left without saying a word. It's the same with others. The exquisitely designed courtship teaching scene, with only a few simple words, is enough to show the ignorance of the youthful era and the beauty of love.

In fact, since the beginning of the film, it has the tone of loneliness and desolation, the empty land, the blue uniform, the clean night, everything is simple and calm. It all seemed to speak of the loneliness of people, the loneliness we met and the loneliness we were on the road again. The tunes flowing from the musical instruments, the conversations that are difficult to understand, the eyes of the family members, and even the one-night passion that goes against the original intention, are all full of strong but loneliness that makes people too lazy to escape.

Fortunately, in this story of forbearance and reluctance to talk, there will always be some warm little notes, music, children, and love, which will make you smile every time, slight but sincere.

In the melodious Arabic songs, you think of your lonely days and nights, the encounters you once had with strangers, and the small details that are restrained, clumsy but warm, and suddenly you find yourself wanting to talk.
