"Holy Water" is the third film in the Mehta Elements trilogy (the first two being "Fire" and "Earth"). Set in the 1930s, the film tells the story of Chuya (Saralah), an 8-year-old girl who has just become a widow. According to Hindu tradition, her hair was cut off and she was taken to a women-only shelter. There, Chuya must repent of her past sins, as she is believed to have caused her husband's death. There are young and old women in this shelter, some accepting this fate, but some still have visions for their future. Here, little Chuya begins to think about her role in the world.
"Holy Water" was originally scheduled to start filming on January 30, 2000, but some Hindu extremists were determined to stop the filming, saying the script was "vulgar" and "moral blasphemy." In the end, the $1.8 million movie was done, but things didn't end there. When the film came out, religious extremists were ramping up smears and Mehta's own life was at risk.
Mehta said she was very happy to learn that "Holy Water" will be screened at the opening ceremony of the Toronto Film Festival, and Mehta has now become a Canadian citizen.
Lisa Ray, a famous Indian actress who plays Karjani, a woman grieving over her husband's death and her own fate, says she's "very impressed with being able to film Meher" Tower is proud of this film," she said, adding that she hoped the audience would watch the film with an open mind.
