I love it

The point of this movie is not David Bowie, the chameleon. His blue eyes, as terrifying as they were, were not as good as the change in two hours of the disgusting former Sergeant at first glance.
At first, Sergeant Yuan was weak, although his face was shiny with oil, and his hand was always holding a saber. He is the representative of the brutal Japanese spirit. Violence is caused by fear. Under a calm look, Little Japan could only use a gun, leather boots, and the strength of five people to resist a righteous look. Rather than a concerted effort to flatter their prisoners of war who didn't "respect" them, they were trying to cover up the dirt on their souls with fists and feet. "Japan is an anxious people, they have to be together to do things, so they're all crazy," Lawrence said. He's really a Japanese guy.
"What a funny face with pretty eyes," said Colonel Sallings, played by David Bowie, when he first saw him. On Christmas Eve, this wretched-looking guy smiled and gave the freedom of Lawrence and Sallings as a Christmas present to them. He said, "Merry Christmas, Lawrence. Merry Christmas." At the end of the film, he wears beads and shoes, and his face is no longer oily. On the eve of his execution, he smiled so peacefully. He said, "Merry Christmas, Lawrence. Merry Christmas." The image was fixed on his small cashew eyes and yellowish teeth, and there seemed to be a bright holy light in every wrinkle of his face. Ryuichi Sakamoto's music sounded, and at that moment, I almost cried.
Judging by the subtitles, David Bowie appears to be the protagonist. From the movie, he is not. The existence of Major Sarins is only to stimulate the desire of Captain Nightwell, a piece of Fobbiden Love.
Captain Yai originally seemed very human. He always got along peacefully with prisoners of war within his power and did not make things difficult. But he is Japanese after all, and is deeply influenced by Japanese etiquette. Beneath Little Japan's stiff salute, there are countless repressed desires. Lao Tzu's "inaction" and "no desire" are not repression, but real release. The so-called "empty valley", which is like a valley, also means this. If you forcibly restrain yourself, you will give the "devil" a chance to breed. How to choose between chants and sabres? When black and blue eyes are equally steadfast and unyielding, how should we choose? The demon in Yejing's heart continued to grow, and finally made him paranoid to make a series of inhuman actions. The obsessive Nightwell culminates in an outrageous kiss from the beloved Major Sallins. When Major Salins was buried in the ground with only one head exposed, the demons faded - Yai cut off a tuft of golden hair from the blue-eyed man he loved and gave him a military salute. But he is Japanese after all, and is deeply influenced by Japanese etiquette. So many years later, before his death, he gave the hair to Lawrence, asking him to dedicate it to the shrine. By then, his roles with Lawrence had been reversed.

Lawrence said, "It's your god, it's your goddamn gods. That's what you became. May they rot in hell! Those goddamn gods!" , the best interpretation of faith.
I have to say, Nagisa Oshima has courage. He dared to face up to the inferiority of his nation. He exposed the so-called Yamato nation's crimes and still brutality to the world, so that everyone can know that Japan, a country that people despise (Chinese), is not entirely a bunch of beasts.
The conflict between Eastern and Western cultures in the film is very strong, and the human nature, death, and beliefs are well handled. Just as Sakamoto Ryuichi used Japanese national musical instruments to compose a melancholy soundtrack full of Western flavors.

Tell me about you, if you do music, you can do music and then come to act, just act in acting, and you still look so beautiful.

Ryuichi Sakamoto is really attractive. More attractive than David Bowie!

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence quotes

  • [last lines]

Sgt. Gengo Hara: Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence!

  • Group Capt. Hicksley: [about something Yonoi just said] What the hell's Gyo?

Col. John Lawrence: Uh... It's a Japanese cure for laziness.

Group Capt. Hicksley: Laziness! Jesus Christ, what makes he...

Col. John Lawrence: Why don't you listen? He means *spiritual* laziness, and he believes that if he takes away the food and the water, then he also takes away the nourishment of laziness.

Group Capt. Hicksley: You don't believe that bullshit, do you?

Col. John Lawrence: I don't fucking know! Sir, I will tell you something that may surprise you! If *we* do it, *he'll* do it.
