Before watching it, I heard that the little tigers are very cute, and I really wanted to hug them; I heard that the film was very touching, and I did shed a few tears a few times; I heard that the ending was a happy ending, and the little tigers did escape into the jungle in the end.
However, I still feel that this movie does not have EXCEED EXPECTATION. People say that French sensibilities give it romance and a happy ending, but I think it's too anthropomorphic.
On the contrary, the details reflecting the values of various representatives of that era moved me even more: the local woman who resented the tiger but did not abandon the ancient Buddha statue being shipped out of the motherland; the white hunter and writer who ruthlessly cut off the head of the Buddha statue and shipped it to Europe but cherished the little tiger; The local governor who flattered his horse in order to develop the local tourism industry (and accordingly protected the ancient temple and Buddha statues from being dismembered)...
The performance of "His Royal Highness", who is far inferior to his father in all aspects and despised, asks himself in front of the tiger cage : "Whether only cruelty can be exchanged for everyone's respect", which suddenly changed the audience's (at least my) impression of him. The helplessness of living in the shadow of a powerful father is unbearable but helpless.
