A frustrating movie

When I was in elementary school, watching the little mermaid in "Daughter of the Sea" helplessly and willingly jumped into a bubble, provoking a burst of sadness that was too heavy and painful for the child.

When I was in junior high school, I encountered "Farewell My Concubine", although Dieyi was not a decent role in my concept at that time. However, he witnessed his heavy make-up and heavy makeup, dressed in costumes, crying bitterly in the smoke of criticism. It was his immature actor who hurt him badly. I couldn't tell whether it was more sympathy or more disgust.

In high school, it was another "Master Key": the innocent and kind young girl wanted to find out the truth and rescue the suffering. As a result, he was betrayed by a friend. After struggling in vain, he fell into the trap of a wicked witch, and was sealed in the old body, looking at the wicked man's upturned mouth. This drama ruined my good mood for nearly a week.

Unexpectedly, all of them are in college, and I still watch this "First Fear" with fate. Although it was a film made ten years ago, I still feel that it is exquisitely made and has a degree of relaxation. The plot outline is nothing more than: a young murderer cheated the trust of a lawyer who believes in the goodness of human nature through his perfect performance, and used him to successfully defend himself against schizophrenia as his innocence.

No one else plays this murderer, but my favorite actor Edward Norton. I can't imagine that this is his first movie, and I personally think it is the best work, even better than the famous "Fight Club" (Brad Pitt in this play is lost because of his brilliance).

Stuttering, hesitating, timid Nuno begging for mercy under his grip.

The swearing, cheerfulness, scorching anger was naturally in place under his eruption.

It is said that Norton has taken on a lot of schizophrenic roles afterwards, but it is true that this kind of role that requires subtle acting skills finds him.

Seeing our poor barrister (played by Richard Gere) lost his blood when the truth is broken, I finally understand what the first-degree fear conveyed by the film is, not a painful death, but a living hesitation!

Crazy bad guys are self-obsessive paranoias who believe in what they do. Even if they cause countless harm to others, they will not cause harm to themselves, because that kind of absolute self-confidence is an exceptionally strong protective field. In contrast, we who are kind-hearted people created by mainstream consciousness are very likely to have doubts about truth, goodness and beauty because reality conflicts with illusions. Just like the barrister in the film, the worries about "human nature is inherently good, or inherently evil" lingering in his mind are no less than Hamlet's "to be or not to be".

This is probably why I felt a strong depression in my heart when watching "Daughter of the Sea", "Farewell My Concubine" and "Master Key" at a certain age, because the facts conveyed in the film challenged my established concepts, such as "goodness has good rewards." The simple morality of "the evil repays the evil".

But I also understand that these are all movies, no matter how smooth they look, they are ultimately written based on facts, and they are artistic reality. So when watching a movie and seeing depression, I like to use one sentence to relieve myself: "Film is just film, but life is always life!" Indeed, the purpose of good movies is by no means preaching, they are just to cause people to think about the rhythm. The slower, less obvious real life, they will never be the documentary showing the truest aspect of life.

It is undeniable that every time I get depressed by a certain movie for a while, it does make my mind grow a little bit.

  • Martin Vail: [sitting with Jack Connerman in a bar] First thing that I ask a new client is, "Have you been saving up for a rainy day? Guess what? It's raining!"

  • Archbishop Rushman: [stepping to podium, slowing smiling then laughing, implying to the audience it was a joke] Well I must say, I haven't seen so many lawyers and politicians gathered together in one place since confession this morning.
