I never thought that evolutionary biology would leave scars in my life in such a nearly painful way. Two variants of the virus were discovered in the United Kingdom. The University of Santo Espíri, Ecuador discovered new virus variants that were not related to the British variants in July and November. At the same time, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Israel, Australia, and Singapore have all discovered a British variant. South Africa, Portugal, Ecuador, and Brazil each discovered new virus variants, of which Portugal reported three new variants. The Brazilian variant has not yet been determined whether it is related to the British variant. And now, there are still more than 22.13 million patients in the world, and the cumulative number of infections is approaching 80 million. A trillion-level virus is being born and spread. The appearance of these variants is definitely not the end, and may even be just the prologue. I don't know how the mighty power of natural evolution will tease humans at such a moment, and it is even harder for me to imagine what kind of freak will be selected in the face of the violence of mutation. We must realize that as Chinese, our fight against the epidemic has been successful; as human beings, our fight against the epidemic has failed. I don't want to spread fear, but we must be prepared. Perhaps at some point in the future, our vaccine may lose to crazy evolution, and we will have to suspend the country, isolate it at home, and once again have a life-and-death contest with the virus. Maybe this kind of thing will not happen only once, and maybe the new crown virus will die out soon. But Mother Nature has shown us the tip of the iceberg of her huge arsenal, and we should also know where the red line is.
