When Harry Met Sally (When Harry Met Sally)

This is an old film, filmed in 1989, I saw it only recently and I really like it. Hong Kong translated this film as "90 men and women love". I really don't like this translation. A very good film makes the name extremely vulgar. I don’t know if there are any friends who have missed the film because of this poor translation. If there are, it’s a pity.

The story begins in 1977, when Harry graduated from the University of Chicago took his girlfriend's friend Sally's car to New York. Along the way, the two argued because of their vastly different views on love and life. After arriving in New York, the two parted ways. One day five years later, the two met unexpectedly on the plane. At this time, they still had prejudices against each other, but their views on love were different from five years ago. At this time, Harry was about to get married, and Sarry was also in love. Another five years have passed, and Sally, who had just been broken in love, once again met Harry in the bookstore who was getting a divorce. The two who had just experienced emotional setbacks, after a conversation, decided to start becoming friends. Ten years ago Harry thought that there could be no real friendship between men and women, because sex would always get involved. Now, the two have truly become good friends who talk about everything. They talk about their emotional experiences, eat together, walk together, talk and watch "Casablanca" together... Harry said to his good friend that I have never been with me. A woman who doesn't have sex in such a relationship, I can say anything to her, I don't think she is human. Without the influence and disguise of love, their relationship is simple and stable. They chose the Christmas tree together and spent the first New Year's dance party ten years later. They embraced each other out of friendship. They knew each other's preferences well and introduced their best friends to each other. The two friends fell in love at first sight, but each left them behind. As the days passed, the two sides still introduced friends to each other, but none of them succeeded. One night, Sally suddenly called Harry and asked sadly if he could come over. It turned out that her ex-boyfriend was getting married. Harry hurried over, and Sally threw himself into his arms, crying bitterly. Harry hugged her tightly and comforted her, but their feelings gradually changed. They began to kiss each other, and then... the next morning, Harry hurried away in a panic. This incident broke the stable relationship between the two of them, and after a conversation, both of them duplied that it was a mistake. At the wedding of a good friend, Harry, who had planned to ease the relationship between the two, annoyed Sally, and she slapped him. Another year's New Year's Eve arrived, and Sally, who refused Harry's invitation, could hardly face the joyous crowds alone anyway. She sadly refused the retention of her friends and walked out of the party. At this time, Harry, who had just awakened from a big dream, was rushing towards him. The two met at the door of the church, and Harry finally confessed to Sally: "I love you and stay calm at 71 degrees. I love you. It takes an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love you frowning and looking at me as if I am a madman. I love to spend a day with you and still smell your perfume on my clothes. I love you every day. The last person who wants to talk before going to bed. I am here tonight not because I am lonely, nor because it is New Year’s Eve. I am here because when you realize that you will spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to begin as soon as possible. "(I love it when you get cold when it's 71 degrees out there; I love it when it takes an hour and a half to order a sandwich; I love it when you get a crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts; I love it when I've spent a day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes; and I love you're the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night . And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve; I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

The film expresses a lot of concepts and ideas about the differences between the sexes. The childishness and extremeness in his youth, the fantasy and disillusionment of love, the despair and helplessness after the sea. For friends who are too young, this film may not be addictive. There is no each other, no life or death, but for friends who have experienced love or marriage, you can always be in this or that scene, or just casually. Resonance is found in a convenient line. The love here is the return after washing all the lead, it is the feelings of stomping on the ground with both feet. I personally feel that the protagonist and heroine perform very well in showing the pain of feeling hurt when they are hurt. They are real, natural and empathetic. There are still many interesting topics in the film. At the beginning of the film, the male protagonist thought that there can be no real friendship between men and women. No man can be friends with a woman he finds charming. He always wants to have a relationship with her. Even if she doesn't want it, it won't help, because sex already exists, and friendship is doomed to break.

You must watch the original English version of this movie, because it is almost entirely composed of dialogue between actors. The male protagonist Billy Christo is famous for acting in comedies, but in this drama, his performance is restrained and passionate. Listening to his large and long lines is like listening to firecrackers. Very enjoyable. Friends who are confident in their hearing may wish to try. The heroine Meg Ryan became popular with this film, showing the charm of a blond sweetheart. The scene in the play that disguised an orgasm in a restaurant public place is a classic segment that many people talk about. The director used several couples' review of their love and marriage to divide the film into several paragraphs, and finally ended the film with Harry and Sally's review. There is no grandstanding gimmick, no Hollywood-style exaggerated dramatic ups and downs, the whole film gives people a clean, natural feeling, and at the same time it is a bit relaxed and elegant. It is said that Billy won the 1990 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for this film, and Meg was nominated for Best Actress.

In short, from the performance of the actors, the way of telling the story, the design of the lines, and the shooting of the pictures, this film is worthy of your quiet appreciation and detailed experience in the dead of night.

It is not good to watch too many romance movies, and it is easy to be poisoned.

I like this kind of film made in that era. It has a sense of film, with few soundtracks, and it's a bit boring. Simple feelings, interior scenes, underdeveloped electrical appliances, enclosed spaces and relationships. Don't worry, a few dialogues have passed in ten years, and then meet again, and then slowly observe its late unfolding. There is no need to fight and fight, if there is no story, you can continue to live. Be serious and simple, never leave anything by the side, quietly end quietly, you can leave it behind after reading it, and sleep together, without even more ambitions to disturb you. Films with such a temperament cannot be made even if one wants to make them now. This is not only caused by the development of the film industry. The world is different, in a bad way, even if compared with thirty years ago. Movies can no longer shape confined spaces, they care too much about the world, or they simply cannot refuse. In addition, as a medium, film has a very small capacity and is not suitable for load-bearing. Load-bearing must borrow force from other media, otherwise it will be directly crushed, and the borrowing force will easily be crushed by another universe. Therefore, this kind of strength is just right.

When Harry Met Sally... quotes

  • Harry Burns: You know, I have a theory that hieroglyphics are just an ancient comic strip about a character named Sphinxy.

  • Harry Burns: You realize of course that we could never be friends.

    Sally Albright: Why not?

Harry Burns: What I'm saying is - and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form - is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.

Sally Albright: That's not true. I have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.

    Harry Burns: No you don't.

    Sally Albright: Yes I do.

    Harry Burns: No you don't.

    Sally Albright: Yes I do.

Harry Burns: You only think you do.

Sally Albright: You say I'm having sex with these men without my knowledge?

Harry Burns: No, what I'm saying is they all WANT to have sex with you.

    Sally Albright: They do not.

    Harry Burns: Do too.

    Sally Albright: They do not.

    Harry Burns: Do too.

Sally Albright: How do you know?

Harry Burns: Because no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her.

Sally Albright: So, you're saying that a man can be friends with a woman he finds unattractive?

Harry Burns: No. You pretty much want to nail 'em too.

Sally Albright: What if THEY don't want to have sex with YOU?

Harry Burns: Doesn't matter because the sex thing is already out there so the friendship is ultimately doomed and that is the end of the story.

Sally Albright: Well, I guess we're not going to be friends then.

    Harry Burns: I guess not.

Sally Albright: That's too bad. You were the only person I knew in New York.
