Miss chaplin

In the past, the knowledge of Chaplin was limited to the funny tramp, who thought he was a humorous humanitarian, and wiped the tears from the faces of the poor with a smile. After watching "The Great Dictator" today, I realized that he is a true idealist, an artist who creates a better future, and a great dream maker!

The following paragraph is his speech at the end of the film.
Regardless of whether democracy and freedom are right or wrong, the sincerity in his speech has completely moved me.
Miss Chaplin!

-------------------------------------------------- --Fighting

for freedom (speaking at the end of "The Great Dictator")
I am very sorry, I don't want to be emperor, that's not my job. I neither want to rule anyone, nor do I want to conquer anyone.
If possible, I would rather help everyone, whether they are Jews or non-Jews, black or white.

We all help each other.
This is how you should be.
We must build our lives on the happiness of others, not on the suffering of others.
Let us not hate each other or despise each other.
There are enough places in this world for all people to live.
The earth is rich, and it can make everyone well clothed.

The road of life can be free and beautiful, but it's a pity that we lost our way.
Greed poisons human souls and builds up barriers of hatred all over the world, forcing us to march forward towards suffering and massacre.
We have developed speed, but we have isolated ourselves.
Machines should create wealth, but they have brought us poverty instead.
When we have knowledge, we see through everything; when we learn clever and well-behaved, we become cold and ruthless.
We use too much of our mind and too little of our emotions.
What we need more is not machines, but humanity.
What we need more is not smart and well-behaved, but kindness and tenderness.
Without these things, life will become violent and everything will be over.

Airplanes and radios have shortened the distance between us.
The nature of these things is to bring out the good qualities of human beings; it requires people all over the world to love each other, and it requires us all to unite with each other.
There are millions of people in the world who love each other and demand that we all unite with each other.
In the world today, millions of people hear my voice—millions of disappointed men, women, and children—all of them are victims of a system that makes people tortured and treats the innocent. Thrown into prison.
I want to say to those who can hear me: "Don't despair."
We are suffering now only because those who are afraid of human progress vent their grievances and satisfy their greed before they are about to die.
The hatred of these people will die, the dictator will die, and the power they have taken from the people will return to the people.
As long as we are not afraid of death, freedom will never disappear.

Warriors!
Don't work hard for those beasts-they despise you-enslaved you-they rule you-tell you what you should do-what you should think, what kind of feelings should you embrace!
They force you to practice and limit your food-treat you as livestock and use you as cannon fodder.
Don't be at the mercy of these irrational people-they are all a group of robots, with the heads of robots, and some of them are the hearts of robots!
But you are not machines!
You are human!
You have human love in your heart!
Don't hate it!
Only those who do not receive love hate—those who do not receive love and who have lost their reason hate!

Warriors!
Don't fight for slavery!
Fight for freedom!
In the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel of Luke, it is stated that the kingdom of God is in the hearts of people—not in the hearts of one person or a group of people, but in the hearts of all people!
In your heart!
You people have the power-the power to create machines.
Have the power to create happiness!
Your people have the power to build your own beautiful life-to make life meaningful.
So-for democracy-let us fight and build a new world-a wonderful world that will give everyone a chance to work-it will give young people a bright future, old age People live a stable life.

The beasts used these promises to steal power.
But they are lying!
They never fulfill their promises.
They will never fulfill their promise!
Dictators enjoy their own freedom, but they make the people slaves.
Now, let us fight to liberate the world, to eliminate national barriers, to eliminate greed, hatred, and stubbornness.
Let us fight in order to build a sane world where science and progress will make us all happy.
Soldiers, let us unite for democracy!

Hana, do you hear what I'm talking about?
No matter where it is now, look up and take a look!
Look up, Hana!
The dark clouds are dissipating! The sun shines!
We are leaving the darkness and entering the light!
We are entering a new world-a cuter world, where people will overcome their greed, their hatred, their cruelty.
Look up, Hana!
Human souls have already grown wings, and they will finally fly with their wings.
They flew into the rainbow-into the brilliance of hope.
Look up, Hana!
Look up!

Fight For Liberty(The Final Speech of “the Great Dictator”)
"I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor.
That's not my business.
I don't want to rule or conquer anyone.
I should like to help everyone if possible-Jew, Gentile-black man-white.

We all want to help one another.
Human beings are like that.
We want to live by each other's happiness-not by each other's misery.
We don't want to hate and despise one another.
In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men's souls-has barricaded the world with hate-has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.
We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in.
Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little.
More than machinery we need humanity.
More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.
Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together.
The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man-cries for universal brotherhood-for the unity of us all.
Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world-millions of despairing men, women, and little children-victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me, I say:'Do not despair. '
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed-the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress.
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people.
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers!
Don't give yourselves to brutes-men who despise you and enslave you-who regiment your lives-tell you what to do-what to think and what to feel !
Who drill you-diet you-treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder.
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men-machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines!
You are not cattle!
You are men !
You have the love of humanity in your hearts.
You don't hate, only the unloved hate-the unloved and the unnatural!

Soldiers!
Don't fight for slavery!
Fight for liberty!
In the seventeenth chapter of St Luke, it is written the kingdom of God is within man not one man nor a group of men, but in all men!
In you! You, the people, have the power-the power to create machines.
The power to create happiness!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful-to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then in the name of democracy-let us use that power-let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world- a decent world that will give men a chance to work-that will give youth a future and old age a security.

By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power.
But they lie!
They do not fulfil that promise.
They never will!
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.
Now let us fight to fulfil that promise!
Let us fight to free the world-to do away with national barriers-to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.
Let us fight for a world of reason-a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us unite!

Hannah, can you hear me?
Wherever you are, look up Hannah.
The clouds are lifting!
The sun is breaking through!
We are coming out of the darkness into the light.
We are coming into a new world-a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and their brutality.
Look up, Hannah!
The soul of man has been given wings and at last he is beginning to fly.
He is flying into the rainbow-into the light of hope, into the future, the glorious future that belongs to you, to me, and to all of us.
Look up, Hannah... look up!"

  • Mr. Jaeckel: If things get worse, you can still go to Osterlich. That's still a free country. Sooner or later, we'll have to go.

  • Mr. Jaeckel: How's business?

A Jewish Barber: Very slow. Very slow.

Mr. Jaeckel: The trouble is the men are all in Concentration Camps. You should go in for fixing up the women! Nice money in the beauty parlor business. Do you know anything about it? Heh?

    A Jewish Barber: Me? No.

Mr. Jaeckel: Oh, you could learn. You could practice on Hannah.

    A Jewish Barber: Yeah!
