Vorenus and Pullo do have people in their history. Their names are known to later generations because they were named by Caesar himself in the book. Unlike in the play, the two are not in a subordinate relationship but an equal level, both are Centurions. In a campaign against Gaul, Pullo broke out of the fortified camp of the Roman legions and slammed directly into the opposing crowd, but was soon outnumbered and surrounded. Seeing this, Vorenus also rushed out to engage in close combat with the opponent. The two fought side by side and eliminated many enemies. They were cheered by their comrades as they returned to their team. Caesar, who witnessed such a heroic (2b?) act, praised them both in the book of the conquest of Gaul ( Commentāriī dē Bellō Gallicō ).
Later, after Caesar broke with Pompeii, Pullo joined the Pompeii camp and remained heroic.
So although there are people, HBO basically only uses names, and the stories are all made up by themselves.
PS: Since I'm already so geeky, I'll write a little more knowledge. Cleopatra is Egyptian, Caesar is Roman, do they speak Egyptian or Latin when they fall in love?
The answer is: neither. They communicated hohoho~~~Cleopatra in Greek as the ruling class of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, but they were not orthodox Egyptians (just like the ruling class of the Qing Dynasty was Manchus not Han). She is actually Macedonian and her native language is Greek. And Caesar's Greek is also sloppy, because the Roman aristocrats at that time communicated in Greek to show their identity (but his Latin writing level was very high). Eighth is over, I'm so geeky, I have no life~~~
