This film is called bad in the eyes of everyone, and many people have no interest in it after watching half of it, which is a pity.
Although in this film, Quentin is just a screenwriter. But his film style is well known to everyone, always upside down and never following the rules. Most of the audience was in a fog, and it was difficult to understand what was going on. It cannot be said that it is completely brain-burning, but it must be considered from the philosophical perspective of art. As far as the two works "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" are concerned, most people can only picture it happily, and cannot fully say why. I watched "Reservoir Dogs" once a few years ago, and at that time I didn't even know what I was talking about... So I have to carry some so-called prejudice when watching his films in the future. After all, everyone has their own subjective ideas and different ways of thinking. Even the director and screenwriter may be fooling the audience about some of the puzzling points of the film, and they may not know what they want to express. Because I'm afraid of being slapped in the face, I can only talk about some of my personal opinions. If you don't like it, don't spray it!
Let's first understand some of the classic dialogues in the second half of the film, and then try to figure out the film, which will get twice the result with half the effort.
"Why did they deserve to die? I think people have a past, sin and some shameful things, and many living people are already dead, they just need someone to help them end their lives. That's my job. The messenger of fate. Unless the wheat Fall to the ground and die, otherwise once it takes root, it will bear fruit. Everyone has demons in their hearts, and demons exist in people's hearts. They live by hatred, burn, kill, seize, and plunder. They take advantage of human weakness and fear. Only the evil people In order to survive, we all understand that in our living space, we are not a good thing. Soon after, the bad nature will be revealed. I am both light and dark. (The male lead has a Tai Chi tattoo on his left forearm, and the female lead also has it.) The way to get rid of demons... is love! So I know Melary is my salvation, she taught me how to love, I forgive you, baby, it's like the Garden of Eden, only love can kill demons, my pure moment Better than the lies of your life!"
Both the male and female protagonists had very tragic childhood growth experiences, and each lived in domestic violence. They met at the heroine's home. After a brief and slightly American romantic conversation, they left a message card, stole the family car and walked away. After that, the two cherished each other, and the idea was to get rid of the shackles of real life. In the end, she chose to go back to kill her father, and then tied her mother to the bed and doused it with gasoline. Of course, she did not forget to light the fire. When I left, I saw the scene of my brother and said, "You are free." It can be seen that the heroine has long hated this unbearable family, and is unable to escape this devilish shackles. Next, the desperadoes turned their inner pain and helplessness into a murderous feast.
Afterwards, the wedding between the two on the bridge was also slightly casual. The male protagonist slashed his left palm and the female protagonist's right palm with a knife, and intertwined his fingers. Their blood circulated among the wounds in their hands. Dripping into the river, rushing to the sea, tacitly swearing that no matter what happened, we would never part. At this moment, the white silk scarf that was wrapped around the head of the female lead also floated down, and it was irreversible. Immediately afterwards, the film inserts an animation of two entwined snakes resembling a dragon, and then follows until the abyss. I can't help but think of a sentence from Nietzsche's "Beyond Good and Evil": "If you fight with a dragon for too long, you will become a dragon yourself; if you stare at the abyss for too long, the abyss will stare back." This sentence is at this moment. Incorporated into this segment, there is no sense of disobedience! Even if it is used to interpret the entire film, it has the same effect!
Then the two put on wedding rings for each other and drove away. That night, when he found a place to live and was about to make out, the male protagonist found that the ring on the female protagonist's hand was not there. The heroine: "I took it off so that I can wash my hair." The hero was slightly dissatisfied: "Even if this ring hooks your hair off, it still has to be worn on your hand, even if my eyeballs are hooked off. Can't take it off." The seemingly short dialogues show their true temperament, and see how deep their obsession with love is! Although it is a kind of perseverance, it is not a tragedy...
In the film, there is nothing to talk about about killing and going to prison, except for the Indian, which is omitted here...
In the last scene of the film, the male and female protagonists still decided to kill the host who escaped together. Unexpectedly, after life and death to help them escape, they finally ushered in the trial. If he wanted to try to escape, he chose to come back with dignity and face these two black holes. It used to stare at and understand the embarrassment of every dying heart. (Here I feel sorry for Robert Downey Jr.) People will die, and their words are good. Everyone, all will at the last moment, extremely cruelly pierce all the illusion of tenderness!
Whether it is love, hate and persistent resentment, or black humor of society, war and extreme cruelty. They have been entangled in killing from beginning to end, and together they have built this cloudy, irreversible and pessimistic art world. A lot of people are ugly, and most of them are also sinful, but they are often trying to cover up. The high-profile show host's infidelity at home, father's harassment of his daughter, mother's indifference, and the warden's past abuse of prisoners. All of them are well-dressed and high-sounding, in fact? Everyone's heart is full of ugliness and corruption, and the same play with others' lives and applause.
In real life, there are indeed many people born in domestic violence and misfortune. Perhaps fate is destined to be so, and every victim cannot escape. As for those who live in a happy and happy family, childhood is often immersed in endless warmth. There is no way to understand and appreciate what kind of purgatory on earth is silently endured by a child with an unfortunate childhood and a broken heart every day. There can be no so-called empathy, and the so-called grief and helplessness of the so-called moral and ethical distortion. In any case, I still hope that these unfortunate people will have the courage to face the demon in their hearts, release it, and overcome it! Whether it is choosing to be strangled again and again that cannot be uprooted, or choosing to meet the love that will last forever...
The way of shooting in the film can also be described as art. The balance between color and black and white can also be deepened, enlarged and rendered just right. This film is completely opposite to the values and ethics in the secular world. The pair of desperadoes finally escaped from prison and were safe. As the audience, are everyone in the same mood and extremely complicated? A bloody and violent killing game, satirizing all existing social phenomena with maximum room for play. Complete anti-civilization redemption!
In terms of music alone, the height of this film has already been set, and I can't believe which bad film can be so good. Bob Dylan's You Belong To Me, an old-fashioned love song, was used in the first half, where the male and female protagonists escape from the family and say goodbye in a bar scene. Accompanied by soft singing, the audience will unconsciously push this relationship to a higher level. The opening and ending also reference the two songs Waiting For The Miracle and The Future by Leonard Cohen, the favorite singer. The ending song is even more politically laced with sex, and death is often involved in many of his music and poetry collections. Well, of course there are quite a few immortal poems about love and sex...whatever he means, his phrasing is very Zen, accompanied by rational irony, often immersed in contemplation of death as a finale , not coincidentally.
At the end, I quote a quote from Wilde: "For myself, I must forgive you. A man cannot keep a viper in his breast forever; he cannot get up every night and plant thorns in the garden of his soul."
