The maintenance of the alliance requires constant search for new external threats

Any form of alliance will eventually self-disintegrate from within, and external threats can only make it stronger. This is a true portrayal of human greed and fear. The US-Japan alliance is no exception.

When I revisited Super Battleship last night, I discovered that the five formidable alien warships were actually allusions to the rising power of China.

China has never been more needed by them than today, because if even this imaginary enemy is lost, there will no longer be any threat from outside the alliance. This is often the case in the real world. Common threats give birth to alliances, and alliance maintenance requires constant search for new threats.
