Thoughts on this movie

A very thought-provoking film, perfect for a critical essay :)

selfishness vs. responsibility

Allie is probably the most worthy of analysis on this topic. His selfishness is evident throughout, especially when he says "i'm here to work for you" and "i'm doing this for you".

Selfishness can make a person lose responsibility, because when the desire to accomplish something is too strong, he will sacrifice everything to achieve the goal, even the right to affect others.

illusion

What allie created in jeronimo is nothing but the civilization he imagined. Allie is smart, but he always lives in fantasy, thinking that others will see his ice cubes as treasures, that he has been betrayed, and that everything he does can save others. Maybe allie just didn't want to wake up. Allie is adventurous, and he is timid, too timid to admit mistakes. As mrs fox said, "if america has not blown away, then we have made a terrible mistake". Why should the whole family come and make mistakes with him? Allie still didn't realize her responsibility, but thought she was doing something for others.

adaptation

Charlie was drinking tea while the others danced, and it was clear they weren't quite used to their new life. The ice block mechanism built later is also incompatible with this place standing in the jungle. Allie thinks he has built a new civilization, but he may not realize that everything he brings has the shadow of his past life.

It is clear in the film that jerry prefers a more comfortable and stable life, he is very sensitive, so at the beginning he will worry about what will happen in the future. When they went to deliver the ice, he asked allie when he would be home, and he was willing to follow haddy when he came to the beach. Allie blamed Jerry many times. As a father, he really failed.

Mosquito Coast expresses things that I am not familiar with, but I think after watching this video, I have more thought about the topics it touches on.

The Mosquito Coast quotes

  • Allie: Strictly speaking, there's no such thing as invention, you know. It's only magnifying what already exists.

  • Charlie: My father often talked of things being revealed - that was true invention, he said. Revealing something's use, and magnifying it; discovering its imperfections, improving it, and putting it to work for you. God had left the world incomplete, he said, and it was man's job to understand how it worked, to tinker with it, and to finish it. I think that was why he hated missionaries so much - because they taught people to put up with their earthly burdens. For father, there were no burdens that couldn't be fitted with a set of wheels, or rudders, or a system of pulleys.
