Men have superpowers and usually become heroes to save the world; women have superpowers, are told not to use them, and can protect themselves in the end, which is not bad.
The Taipei Cinema opens on April 4, not long after Christians celebrate Easter...
Norway's high-profile emerging director Joachim Trier (Yuwojin Trier) from the cold and realistic "Oslo, 31. augus August 31st, I am in Oslo" (ie " Oslo, August 31st ") , "Louder Than Bombs memory at first sound" (ie, " fierce gunfire in ") into a dazzling magnificent thriller type "Thelma Mary witch seats" (ie, " Thelma") . I wonder if the Wen Qing audience who supported him in the past can accept the new attempt?
Director Eugene Thiel and his long-time screenwriter partner Eskil Vogt said they wanted to start with formalism this time and try their best to use the visual style. Although different from the previous shooting path, the theme is still concerned about the unbalanced family relationship, the surrounding depression and the pull of personal will. In the past, the works preferred male protagonists, but this time it was changed to female protagonists. This may be thanks to screenwriter Eski Fogg.
Aisi Ji-Fogg independent director works "Blind Blind" (that is, " blindness ") , acquired blindness in the inner world of the heroine role wanton manipulation pen, sometimes absurd and sometimes laughable. In fact, the drama in the movie basically implies that the status of the screenwriter of the movie can influence the overall situation. This concept of psychological power extends to "The Witch Seema", where Seema's superpower is a metaphor for the individual's pursuit of independent will and emotional tension.
The couple from "Blind" once again joined forces to play Seema's parents in "The Witch".
The director and screenwriter admitted that they were initially inspired by Brian De Palma and Stephen King, but didn't want to remake the Norwegian version of Carrie, and they didn't even rewatch it. "Carrie the Witch". However, the name "Witch Seema" by Taiwanese filmmakers clearly echoes the label of "Witch Carrie".
The tragedy of " Carrie the Witch " in the 1970s stemmed from the mother's fear and disgust for sex and lust.
The original mentions that Carrie was a child of sexual assault, and her mother wanted to kill her at one point. From then on, her mother became unconventional and indulged in extreme teachings. The mother repressed Carrie from learning anything about physical development, appearance, interpersonal relationships... So Carrie didn't fit in at school, and her classmates bullied her from contempt. The most prominent example is that when Carrie was 16 years old, she still did not understand the truth of the first classics, and even her teachers looked down on her. Instead of being comforted, her mother regarded menstrual blood as an unclean sin.
With no help along the way, Carrie's frustration turns into resistance. The action force will be equal to the reaction force, and it will be stronger each time. When the humiliation of the people reaches the extreme, the massacre will be triggered, and they will all die together. The movie is so desperate for human nature, there is no redemption.
In 2013, Carrie was remade by Kimberly Peirce. She was the director of Boys Don't Cry (1999), which many expected to inject a modern queer perspective. Because "misfit" is the situation for most LGBT people, religion and community pressure have always been the source of closet.
Unfortunately, the remake is inseparable from the original frame, and there are not many places to play well. However, Peirce mentioned in the interview that the female classmates in the film kept getting together to discuss trouble with Carrie, and had an inexplicable obsession with her. Another example is that the opening of the new version of "Carrie the Witch" was changed to a swimming class, and the youthful carcass appeared sexually attractive, which was somewhat similar to "The Witch".
But Sima's magical bond with Carrie ends there. Seema went further and found the balance of erotic power, or the realization of "self-control". This point has the same effect as Queen Elsa, who is also from the Nordic " Frozen ".
Elsa's ice and snow magic was originally a neutral force. Because of an accident, the parents were afraid that their daughter's superpowers were regarded as negative, and Elsa was locked in closet. Just like Carrie's "misfit", Elsa is full of self-loathing.
Fortunately, her parents did not force Elsa to transform her superpowers. Coupled with her early death and loss of influence, Elsa was able to escape the palace and be free to be herself (Let It Go) in the deep mountains and valleys. She is like a fierce tiger who doesn't know how to control herself, and she uses too much force in one breath to turn the whole small country from summer to winter.
Carrie's superpowers are mostly a reflection of negative emotions, full of lethality. The person who should learn to control is not her, but the people around her who don't know what empathy is.
Elsa's superpowers can actually operate autonomously, and they don't necessarily involve emotions. It's just that her parents mistakenly thought that there would be no harm without interaction, and locked her in an emotional prison. Princess Anna's act of true love represents unconditional acceptance, including her forgiveness for Elsa, and even apologizing on behalf of her parents. Elsa can learn to be strong under the umbrella of family affection and tolerance.
"The Witch" is a lot more complicated than the above two films.
Not long after the movie started, Zima peeked at Anja in the library, and then the bird hit the window, and she fell to the ground with epilepsy. This is not a manifestation of superpower, but a reaction to self-repression. Unlike Carrie, who was bullied by others, she was not rejected by anyone. It was the religious beliefs instilled by the parents that were bullying Shima. Carrie was not as religious as she was.
There are many unreal visions in the film, and maybe something really hit the window. But the flock of birds is probably her inner theater. Like swallowing serpents, trapping underwater, hanging hospital beds, and even the trembling giant pendant above the performance hall... These images symbolize danger and fear, and describe Seema's fear and resistance to her inner desires. An epileptic seizure is like the fear of reaching a critical mass and a sudden electric shock.
Unlike Carrie and Elsa, the main cause of Sima's pain is the repression of homosexuality. Logically, how could homophobia exist in an open Nordic society? It seems that only conservatives, in any part of the world, still see homosexuality as a great sin.
Seema's super power will be affected by emotions and desires, and she has the ability to live with love and die with evil. When I was a child, I was jealous of my brother's possession of my mother's care, and hurt innocent people ignorantly. But why her grandmother let her husband disappear without a trace is unknown.
The foreign community has heatedly discussed the super power of Shima, in addition to displacement, disappearance, fire, and medical treatment, can it control the will of others? One faction agreed with her father's theory and felt that Anya was bewitched by Seema. For example, Anya suddenly appeared outside Seema's dormitory in the middle of the night, and at the end, Seema first felt Anya kissing the nape of her neck, and then Anya seemed to follow her instructions and kissed exactly the same way.
I lean towards the romantic interpretation:
Seema can't control other people's will, just like she can't change her parents' opinion of her, she can only strengthen Anya's existing motivation. As for the kiss at the nape at the end, it may be seen as Seema's ability to predict, not control.
The film struggles to dehumanize her father. He's not a one-dimensional villain, just caring in the wrong way. He turned to religion for assistance beyond scientific understanding. Even though he fears God so much, he still thinks he uses psychotropic drugs to control human nature.
I have recently read a lot of information on "Sexual Orientation Reversal Therapy". Religious people want to correct comrades.
Foreign countries often touch the taboo of killing relatives. The three heroines with superpowers face family disputes: "Carrie the Witch" is the death of the daughter and the mother, and "The Witch" is the father's responsibility to distort two generations. The fairy tale version of Queen Elsa doesn't have to hold her parents accountable because the movie cleverly lets them die in a shipwreck.
Appreciating "Sima the Witch" on the big screen, in addition to the impressive visuals, the sound effects are quite amazing, which fully set off the atmosphere of horror and suspense, often making people breathless. Euwogin Till's father was in film recording before he retired, so he was very immersed in the sound and paid a lot of attention to the sound performance.
If the film's shortcomings are the incomplete logic of the script, the happy but unsatisfactory ending. It took a lot of time to put on a dazzling photography, but there was no spare time to finish it well.
However, Eili Harboe, the heroine of the same name in the movie, has good looks, temperament and acting skills. For Lazi audiences, "Sima the Witch" is one of the must-see works in recent years.
