I saw this film at the 2018 Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF), and the audience was surrounded by a group of various Melbourne middle-aged and elderly lace, and friends as the minority Asian yong ladies, because this film is really humorous There are also plenty of laughs. I hear very slay laughter from the aunts around me from time to time, which makes this movie even more funny.
The English title of the film is called "My Days of Mercy", in fact, the whole chapter also revolves around the word "mercy", which means "kindness, tolerance, mercy". The film tells the story of how Lucy (Ellen Page) and Mercy (Kate Mara), with opposing political views, fall in love during a demonstration and are divided. The difference between the positions of the two sides is whether to execute the death penalty on the suspect. Just like the title of the film "My days of Mercy", the focus is on how to forgive or be forgiven in this entanglement. Not long after the film started, when the two heroines first met, Kate Mara wanted to shake hands and introduce herself as "Mercy", but at this time Lucy played by Ellen didn't even realize that the other party was introducing herself, thinking that Mercy was the one the other party said. Words that represent forgiveness and kindness. However, I personally thought that this main story was not strong enough that it was surpassed by the emotional line of Mercy and Lucy later. The three sex scenes plus the two very funny love scenes, as well as the occasional meaty jokes, add a lot to this gay relationship. Otherwise, this story will work even if it is a heterosexual relationship between a man and a woman.
On the contrary, Ellen Page has been devoted to LGBTQI+ activities on the screen and in the media in the past few years, so this Peggy, who seems to be unstoppable, has made this film a homonormality film. As mentioned above, there is no very "homo" factor in the main story line. It doesn't matter even if a man and a woman play a similar heterosexual plot. This kind of homosexual normalization and the normalization of the plot are exactly what the current same-sex movies need. It is not to describe same-sex feelings with great sadness and great joy. Such as "Carol" (2015), "Rejected Life" (2015) or "Disobedience" (2017), which will premiere in Australia, through special cultural backgrounds and special events to show the fetters of same-sex love And when it comes to getting in the way, Mercy doesn't show much of this so-called "same-sex love inborn trouble," even though its main storyline is weak. In addition, Ellen basically does not wear makeup in the movie and does not hide her forehead lines at all, which makes people feel that this person is really a gay idol.
Because I volunteered at MQFF the day after watching the movie, I discussed the movie with other volunteers. I said it really embarrassed me to see two real-life best friends Ellen and Kate have sex so much in the movie. The volunteers on the side said, "It's good to get used to it, mainly because Kate is too straight, and Ellen is extremely curvy (extremely gay), I can't imagine what they look like together." Then another person next to him was in charge of photography 's volunteer said: "It would have been better if Rooney Mara, she looked mysterious, but I can't imagine her having sex with Ellen."
Besides, for the first time in an environment dedicated to screening queer films (MQFF), every Lesbians, gay guys, trans, drag queens, bi, queer of different ages I met in Melbourne Very friendly, the whole atmosphere is very harmonious, gender-neutral, like MQFF's tagline this year "Proudly feel different", and like Ellen once did to a homo killer in Viceland's Gaycation Brazil episode Say, I'm a lesbian and I'm standing in front of you now, so are you going to kill me? That courage and pride, a kind of fraternity displayed by this group of people who were born friendly regardless of gender.
