Aside from the impeccable acting skills of the actors, superb filming skills and just the right soundtrack, the objective depiction and respect for the complexity of history in the darkest hour is in my opinion insufficient.
As a pseudo-history buff who has lived in France, Belgium, and Germany for a long time. Let's talk about the "controversial" parts of the movie.
A sensational scene in the movie is Churchill in order to "save" more than 300,000 British soldiers in Dunkirk, and let 4,000 British soldiers stationed in Calais "send to death". All kinds of hesitation in internal meetings, and a tear from a beautiful female typist, all show the heroic color of self-sacrifice under the cruelty of war.

But did the main sacrifice come from the British soldiers? French and Belgian sources seem to show a different scenario:
Churchill planned to launch Operation Dynamo to protect the British from retreating. In order to stabilize Belgium and France so that they could continue to fight against the Germans, the two countries were not informed of the retreat plan in time. Churchill also promised the Belgian Prime Minister that Britain would fight Germany with the Belgian Legion.
Losing the British allies, the remaining Belgian troops, plus seven divisions of the French army, fought the Germans to the last minute, basically fighting ten.
By the time the last ship left Dunkirk, 35,000 French soldiers had been killed or captured.

On June 12, Churchill refused to help then French Prime Minister Paul Reno to continue resisting the Germans in France. Confidence between the Anglo-French alliance collapsed.

Soon after, France, fighting alone, had to surrender and form the Vichy government.

History is the history of the victors, and it is also the history that is sung.
The real darkest are those cannon fodders who are not even mentioned.

On the bright side, the movie cuts into the core of the event with characters, almost reshaping the complete staged history with little weight. The bad thing is that its character creation urgently uses dense embellishment to pile up the image, leaving no space to enrich the soul of the character, and the frequent light and shadow scheduling of the scene is even more pretentious and suspicious. Acting as the highlight of the film is actually quite laborious. Oldman's imitation of Churchill may be exquisite, but he does not feel the slightest anger. ★★☆

Commemorating Wright's many years of filming, if he doesn't advance or retreat, his aesthetic has fallen to the same level as Hooper, and he is addicted to abusing the lens.

Darkest Hour quotes

  • Winston Churchill: [in his first speech as Prime Minister] But now one bond unites us all. To wage war until victory is won, and never to surrender ourselves to servitude and shame. Whatever the cost and the agony may be, conquer we must, as conquer we shall.

  • Winston Churchill: Do I have your, uh, permission, uh, to send, uh, an aircraft carrier to pick up the P-40 fighter planes we purchased from you? Mr. President?

President Roosevelt: Well, you-you've got me there again. New law preventing transshipment of military equipment.

Winston Churchill: Uh, but we paid for them. We-we paid for them with the money that we... that we borrowed from you.
