Although the film does not tell us whether prot is from K-pax or not, I firmly believe that prot is from an alien planet. Although that planet has no family, social relations, family, friendship, or love, everyone is just a tiny speck of the universe. Minister, if one leaves, no one will miss it; if one goes back, no one will be happy. Therefore, prot can only feel the preciousness of this friendship when he meets porter on earth.
