Subtle and full of tension

Lee Chandler was a taciturn man, doing endless chores in Boston. But that seems to be just an excuse for him to escape the past and hide his grief, and even when the news of his beloved older brother Joe's passing of a heart attack doesn't add more grief to his stern face. After returning to his hometown of Manchester, which he had abandoned for many years, he found himself named guardian of his nephew Patrick. Lee Chandler is reluctant to move back to his hometown with too many memories, and his nephew Patrick is reluctant to abandon his life and friends and go with Li Yuan.

This film is a work of documentary style, and the story itself and the performance of the actors have enough tension in themselves. In some of the most intense moments of emotional release, we can feel more real from the atmosphere and performance. Such a story, of course, cannot make the audience relax, but it has another "releasing" effect, which makes us cherish the happiness in front of us more.

The funeral of returning home (going home to see the corpse) is really a wide range of subjects. It can be a drama, a comedy, and a satire. The flashback cut of this film is quite interesting, just like a title symbol of the feature film, a comma, an exclamation mark, and an ellipsis. The face of Casey Affleck, like his brother Ben, is naturally depressed and unhappy.

I discussed this movie with my sister before watching. She said that if he had committed suicide, why would I be alive? I said I thought I was alive. There is a way to live. Either I live or I can’t live better than others. Is it better to look at myself? My sister replied after you read it and said that I have read it now. If I were him, I had committed suicide early, why would I be alive?

Manchester by the Sea quotes

  • Lee Chandler: You know, I've seen a school of sharks tear a boat to pieces like it was made of cardboard because some kid threw a band-aid in the water.

    Patrick: Oh, yeah...

Lee Chandler: Yeah, he did! Sometimes the only way to keep them off is to throw the kid directly in the ocean to distract them!

Patrick: Shut up. Sharks don't even swim in schools!

Lee Chandler: Huh? He says sharks don't swim in schools. Smart kid.

  • Patrick: You were a tremendous help.

Lee Chandler: I didn't ask to sit down there.

Patrick: You can't make small talk like every other grown-up in the world?

    Lee Chandler: No.

Patrick: You can't talk about boring bullshit for half an hour? "Hey, how about those interest rates?" "Hey, I lost my Triple A card." Like everybody else?

    Lee Chandler: No, sorry.

    [pause]

    Patrick: You're a fucking asshole.
