The two protagonists of the film, Sophie is a quiet and kind little girl. She fell in love with Hal at first sight, but she thinks she is not beautiful and dare not expect the charming Hal to love herself. She was turned into an old woman by the witch of the wilderness, after which she went to Hal's mobile castle and cleaned the room for Hal. She thought that as long as she was an old woman, she would not be embarrassed to do anything for Hal, so she would rather be an old woman. This is her heart knot, her old attitude is actually a reflection of inner depression and low self-esteem. The male protagonist Hal is a powerful magician. He has a good character, handsome appearance, loves to dress up, and a little timid, but when his lover is present, he will be extremely brave. Howl is unwilling to serve the warlike palace, avoiding the king's enlistment, and often sabotage the war secretly, so he is a lonely anti-war person.

Everyone talks about war with love, and Hayao Miyazaki must talk about love with war. Maybe it's the most colorful one in Gong Lao's movies, and it's magical and dazzling. Every character in it is good and bad, I like this setting.

Magic and curse allow people who do not know each other to meet, know, protect and tolerate each other. It is love and courage to break the curse of imprisonment and return to the original beauty. The story is eccentric, the characters are vivid and thorough, the plot goes back and forth, and the pictures are beautiful in color.

Howl's Moving Castle quotes

  • Markl: [reading the newspaper] But the newspaper says we won.

Witch of the Waste: [smoking a cigar] Only idiots believe what they read in the paper.

Old Sophie: That's so strange, I can't get Calcifer going!

[to the Witch of the Waste]

Old Sophie: Do you have to keep smoking that? It smells terrible!

Witch of the Waste: Don't deny an old witch her pleasures, young lady.

Old Sophie: Markl, will you crack a window, please?

Witch of the Waste: [continues smoking] I wouldn't open that window if I were you, dear. Calcifer's too weak right now to protect this place, Suliman's henchmen could get in.

  • Young Sophie: [Approaches the Witch of the Waste while she tries to hide Howl's heart] Howl needs that back now.

Witch of the Waste: Don't look at me, I don't have it, I don't know what you're talking about.

Young Sophie: [hugs her] Please give it back.

Witch of the Waste: You really want it that badly?

Young Sophie: [on the verge of crying] Yes.

Witch of the Waste: Alright then, you'd better take good care of it.

    Young Sophie: Okay.

Witch of the Waste: [hands her Howl's heart] Here, dear.

Young Sophie: Thank you, you have a big heart!

    [kisses her]
