A horrific murder occurred in Chicago that shocked the whole city.
Bishop Rosen of a local church was tragically killed and his body was engraved with mysterious numbers. The police arrested the blood-stained suspect Alan (Edward Norton) who was present at the time.
Martin (Richard Gere), as Aaron's defense attorney, has a rivalry with his ex-girlfriend, prosecutor Janet.
Martin doesn't care about the facts, his sole purpose in defending Allen is to win the case and make himself famous. And Janet, as a representative of justice, certainly did not give in.
Janet (Laura Linney) investigates and finds out that Bishop Rosen had sexually assaulted Aaron and others during his lifetime, and Aaron's justification for having "time amnesia" is also absurd. The murder witnesses who arrived have never been found. Janet believes that all evidence is available, including a motive for the murder.
Martin successfully exonerates Allen with the excuse of being mentally ill, however, everything is unexpected.
