First of all, the whole movie is still full of Kurosawa Akira's labels, and every shot is not a waste. Although it is in a messy room, several quiet scenes in the yard are still very beautiful. The compact storyline, although I did not clearly distinguish several of them, but the development direction of the main ones made me eager to watch and wonder what would happen. The meaning of life displayed by the lower class is hopeful, content with the status quo, and hope to learn from the good side. The actor's performance was really good. Personally, I think this one is no worse than the Seven Samurai.

    Weird piece, kinda punk.

A single scene like a stage play, all kinds of characters are drawn and painted, but they cannot escape this dark, dirty and cramped "bottom of the world". The only old man in white clothes is like the incarnation of "Buddha" and "Hope" in his own mouth, to enlighten these people who can't find a way out. But is what he said true? - "He exists to those who believe in him." Akira Kurosawa raised the tragedy of this lowest-class life to the level of belief and philosophy.

The Lower Depths quotes

  • Yoshisaburo the Gambler: [to the actor] Gimme five pennies. If you do, I'll consider your 'naturally gifted actor' a star-billing, tip-top, top-notch, sterling-silver actor.

  • Rokubei, Osugi's Husband: Three mats' worth for bedtime and taking over the common room. I'm raising your rent by ten pennies.

Tomekichi the Tinker: Why not just strangle me?

Rokubei, Osugi's Husband: Because I wouldn't get a single penny out of that.

    Tomekichi the Tinker: Wanna fight?

[Rokubei staggers back, accidentally treading on a reclining Yoshisaburo]

    Yoshisaburo the Gambler: Hey! Ouch!

Rokubei, Osugi's Husband: [to Yoshisaburo] Don't scare me.
