I didn't expect much of this "Kong: Skull Island" before, watching this "Skull Island" subtitle is like a low-quality B-grade horror movie. I didn't expect it to be a surprise after watching it!
First of all, the style of the film is great, nostalgic and retro are in place! I especially like the foreshadowing of the first half hour of the film, which is slow and slow, the characters are explained in place, and the atmosphere is well created, unlike some commercial blockbusters that are rude and direct. Another feature: the film grafted monster movies with Vietnam War movies, and made a new idea. Many scenes are reminiscent of classic Vietnam War films such as Apocalypse Now, Field Platoon, and The Deer Hunter. The theme of the film is also reflected in the background of the Vietnam War: don't take things you don't understand as enemies at will! (It would be valuable to make such a proposition in a commercial monster blockbuster)
The film also inherits the bad taste of the B-level film of Peter Jackson's "King Kong". The scene of the battle with spiders is very interesting, and the design of the mimic bugs behind it is also very novel. It's a pity that the big boss is not good, it seems to come from an oriental magic blockbuster, and the final monster duel is also somewhat similar to the PJ version of King Kong VS Three Tyrannosaurus. If there are ten minutes more content in the second half, the human villain will have more scenes, the conflict with the protagonist will be more intense, and the emperor's plan will be shown more, I feel that the film can still go to a higher level! As an up-and-coming director who has only made "King of Summer" independent small fresh films, this Jordan Vogt-Roberts has great potential! I think this film is a bit underrated in North America, but I personally like it very much.
