In 1949, the Pacific War had ended, and Freddie Jacqui (played by Joaquin Phoenix), who was troubled by the boring life in the army, finally returned to the United States. However, the spiritual treatment before returning home did not give him practical help. Reddy was caught in a trance and tedious life experience that he couldn't extricate himself from. The following year, after a series of job failures, Freddie meets the complicated "Master" Custer (Philip Seymour Hoffman) on a passenger ship drunk. Custer's psychotherapy based on the theory of time aroused Freddy's interest. Under Custer's "temptation", Freddy tried to open up, seek to solve his own problems, and became closer to Custer.
