Coraline thought that her life was boring. Her parents spent all their time in working and didn't even look at her in her eyes. While she was talking, she has no response from others. Her daddy handed her a note book and said, "Go to find how many doors this house has. Don't disturb me." Surprisingly, Coralline found a concealed door. It was a totally different world. In that world, her 'the other mother' would like to cook delicious food. Her 'the other father' would take her to visit their amazing garden. She could go to watch circus performance and enjoy all the fun. The only different thing was that the people's eyes were buttons, not real eyes. Before she went to sleep, her parents would kiss her. However, when she opened her eyes the next morning, she came back to the dull life she used to have.Coraline was fascinated with the wonderful world. She can't wait to go into it. But other people suggested her not do that. "Danger" A lady who is her neighbor told her from the teacup. Right then, the other mother showed her true color. She is the ruler of the world. She forced coralline to stay and intended to change her eyes into buttons. Then the fight against the mother went on. At last coralline beat her and saved the children's souls. The story tells about the relationship between reality and fantasy. Sometimes we may think the life is boring, just like Coralline. In order to avoid the dull life, we incline to seek stimulations, like fantasy. At first, living in fantasy is quite good. In that world, everything is wonderful and is all as we like. We would prefer the fantastic world rather than the real ordinary world. However,if we rely on the fantasy, things changed. The world seems beautiful, but it is still the projection of ourselves. The fear and evasion of ordinary life doesn't disappear. In the movie, 'the other mother' symbolizes Caroline's evasion towards the reality.

Coraline quotes

  • Other Father: [robotic] All will be swell, soon as Mother's refreshed. Her strength is our strength...

[one of the robotic hands closes his mouth forcefully]

Other Father: Mustn't... talk when Mother's not here.

Coraline Jones: If you won't even talk to me, I'm gonna find the other Wybie. He'll help me.

    Other Father: No point.

    [face distorts]

Other Father: He pulled a loooong face... and Mother didn't like it.

  • Coraline Jones: [on the "Other" Mother] Why does she want me?

Cat: She wants something to love, I think. Something that isn't her. Or, maybe she'd just love something to eat.

Coraline Jones: Eat? That's ridiculous, mothers don't eat... daughters.

Cat: I don't know. How do you taste?

    [chuckles]
