14-year-old Ellis (Tye Sheridan), a 14-year-old boy who lives by the Mississippi River, and his friend Naik found an abandoned boat on a small island in the middle of the river. Germany (Matthew McConaughey Matthew McConaughey). Madd claimed to have lived here when he was a child, and asked Eisley and Naik to help him because of his mobility problems. With the family on the verge of falling apart, Ellis instinctively trusts Madd, provides him with food, and learns that Mad and childhood sweetheart Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) have been infatuated with each other for years. The past of murder, it turns out that Mad is on the island at the moment to avoid the pursuit of bounty hunters and at the same time want to take Jennifer away. Ellis is willing to believe in Mad's love, and despite life's disappointing undertones, he's willing to lend a hand to this big, unfamiliar friend...
