There is everything on the road to glory, but true glory is lacking

There is no hero, no death, no glory and bravery; there is a phobia of shells, there is coercion and inducement, and there is blood dripping. If Jiang Wen's "Devils Are Coming" is "uglifying" China, and Akira Kurosawa is "uglying" Japan, this film can be said to be "uglying" France.

He launched an impossible battle for his career, ordered the artillery to bombard his position in exasperation, and arrested soldiers in order to save face, on the grounds of cowardice. And how are these so-called cowards selected? One was not popular with the commander, one was chosen by lot, and the other was avenged by the company commander for killing a comrade-in-arms, but there was no coward who was timid. The absurdity is exposed here, no one cares if you are really cowardly, but because of the assignment of tasks from above. This is so similar to the assignment of counter-revolutionary indicators by public institutions in the Great Revolution, and there is no glory at all. It's not that people can't die, but they can't die meaninglessly. The three men who were to be executed were innocent, and they were to be punished for the general's impulse, which made them despair.

People are going to die, but soldiers care more about what gets killed. It's better to be killed quickly and painlessly than to die with pain. Death is the end of pain. People fear hurt and pain more than death.

There is only one question in the face of death, whether to die in honor or in disgrace.

The death penalty is not meant to kill, it is not so much to punish, not to punish others. That's why a dying soldier with a serious fracture is rescued, and he is asked to stay awake during the execution.

People are afraid of death, but even more afraid of facing death. Blindfolding will not change what is going to happen, but it will make people invisible to what is going to happen and numb themselves. This is the deepest powerlessness and weakness. The ignorant are happiest, even if happiness and happiness are not the same thing.

Three were executed, the battle was about to begin again, and the soldiers were revelling, give them a few more minutes before they set foot on the road to glory. There is everything on this road, but true glory is lacking.

CC Collection Part 538, produced in the United States in 1957. A group of soldiers who came for no reason, a general who commanded indiscriminately, a failed battle, and the shooting of three small soldiers was regarded as a political explanation. After Michael Douglas's father Kirk Douglas established his own company, he found new director Kubrick's first cooperation, and the German daughter-in-law Christiane Kubrick sang a song at the end of the film. The well-known French writer Humphrey Kirby's novel of the same name was filmed vividly and was banned in France as soon as it was released. I don't know who fooled who in the US-French relationship in that era. 4

The so-called road to glory is just a road paved with lies, flattery and fallen soldiers ps the beautiful captive at the end is Kubrick's wife pps Kirk Douglas is really a father and son like Mike Douglas

Paths of Glory quotes

  • [first lines]

Narrator of opening sequence: War began between Germany and France on August 3rd 1914. Five weeks later the German army had smashed its way to within eighteen miles of Paris. There the battered French miraculously rallied their forces at the Marne River and in a series of unexpected counterattacks drove the Germans back. The front was stabilized then shortly afterwards developed into a continuous line of heavily fortified trenches zigzagging their way five hundred miles from the English Channel to the Swiss frontier. By 1916, after two grisly years of trench warfare, the battle lines had changed very little. Successful attacks were measured in hundreds of yards, and paid for in lives, by hundreds of thousands.

[Col. Dax listens to his regiment humming in the tavern]

    Sgt. Boulanger: Sir?

    Colonel Dax: Yes, sir.

Sgt. Boulanger: We have orders to move back to the front immediately.

Colonel Dax: Well give the men a few minutes more, Sergeant.

    Sgt. Boulanger: Yes, sir.
