Actually more Nordic

Deep, broad, worrying, like a Nordic symphony. In fact, whether it is a good movie can be seen from the first screen, even the title and subtitles. Just like the first bird's-eye view from Lust, Caution, you can see with your own eyes the sultry anger in Shanghai in the 1930s. The first city panorama opened by Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is already shocking. There are several levels in police/spy films. The first level is to write the outcome, and 007 makes a rough calculation. What is shown to the public is a gimmick and a spiritual dream. The second level is to write in black and white, and to write about human nature, and "LA Confidential" in 1997 counts as such. The third tier is society, history, time, and more indescribable things. "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is epic, similar to "Once Upon a Time in America". The basic framework is a story of searching for a traitor. It is similar to the spy and heart war movies that I have seen, and the process and results are also the same. The only difference is that it writes about heart-to-heart battles, wins and losses, but rhyme is far beyond winning or losing. Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Mark Strong, Colin Firth are names that give me a heart attack every time I hear them. They are the tin on mending pots, the copper buttons on clothes, the kind of creatures that better die early or become more refined with age. But, what I want to do is not to be a nympho, but to say that these few together do not guarantee the IQ level of a heart-to-heart battle, but the very information generated by these superimposed lives. Time is longer than East and West, longer than the rise and fall of the three empires. It is the vision of an outstanding artist to ponder and exchange between beliefs that are already very clear in today's world. At the same time, none of this matters. The scope of the film is astonishing. The ashes and reincarnations of several generations, the soul and belief of individuals, have no answer in the face of the deepening questioning.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy quotes

  • [Alleline's telex arrives from London]

    Ricki Tarr: Read it aloud.

Ben: "Personal for Tarr from Alleline: require clarification before meeting your request. Quote, 'information vital to safeguarding of the Circus', unquote, does not qualify, send further information."

Ricki Tarr: [laughing maniacally] That's the way, Percy boy! You keep stalling. I warn you, Ben, we've got some really lousy people in this outfit, I wouldn't trust a fucking one of them!

  • Percy Alleline: The Minister agrees with me that too many secrets are blowin' around here. Too much failure, too many scandals, too little solid intelligence.

Roy Bland: Percy does have a point, Control. We should be fighting communism, not each other.

Percy Alleline: Well, we're losing our reputation. Our partners.

    Control: [scoffs] Your bloody Yanks!

Percy Alleline: And we've had enough! There's going to be changes.

Easterhase: We need to decide if we want to be part of the past or part of the future.

Control: I should have left you where I found you.

    Easterhase: Look!

    Roy Bland: Control-...

    Control: Out! All of you!
