Some time ago, I saw a film review comparing Rohmer and Woody Allen with Hong Sangxiu, and therefore judged Hong Shangxiu to be a not so good director. I was really pissed when I saw that review.
First of all, these are three completely different types of directors. They say they are intellectuals, but Rohmer and Woody Allen still identify and love their intellectual identity no matter how they laugh at themselves, but Hong Sangxiu is obviously not. He doesn't care about his identity. It is such a thing as a literary youth, it is simply to be stripped away, to strip out the word "small".
The same as Woody Allen: high output, high repetition, and different works.
But "Right Then Wrong" is a relatively complete and interesting one.
The film is divided into two parts: a failed and embarrassing male-female hookup. The other time was relatively good and left a nice aftertaste.
And the difference is in some extremely subtle places. The first time Jung Jae-young didn't even do anything too much, but in the end it was a complete mess. The second time he even did some unbelievable actions, such as stripping naked after being drunk... but the other party thought he was cute instead.
Finally, in order to save energy, let me borrow someone else's words to talk about Hong Sang-soo's greatness: "It is undeniable that he has become an expert in turning repetition into film and anthropological structures. His films are light weight and reach extraordinary depth. Generally speaking Repetition is a delicate and difficult task, because sooner or later what appears to be the same will develop into the unexpected, and only a patient director can capture and control these non-fixed changes.”
