Throughout the film, the narration dictated by the heroine contributes a strong contrast. On the one hand, the narrative is all about the content of love and love, but on the other hand, the emotion is abnormally flat and straightforward, which makes people ironic. On the other hand, almost all of the film's composition is very neat, and the camera doesn't move. As neat as the characters appear in the film, no half-sizes, no bisexuality, no gray areas. Among the few scenes that make the camera move, such as the fight between the paired three-man boy group, it is a slightly human scene. This composition and shooting method can be compared with the previous popular European film "The Grand Budapest Hotel". The shooting method is similar, but "Cloth" is actually more neat. The purpose is different, "Cloth" is a humorous flavor of some adult fairy tales. However, in terms of personal taste, I am still a little tired of the painting style of "Cloth".
Having said that, to sum up, the use of all the film techniques in "The Lobster" is in harmony with the theme of the film, and the effect is outstanding.
In terms of story, the Utopia setting of this film is actually quite bizarre. In the background, perhaps because of too much indifference between people, the government has adopted various policy measures to force adults to match each other. For example, after the male protagonist was cheated on by his ex-wife (the female protagonist was not sent to the hotel, so he was looking for a good home), he was immediately sent to match, and the lame man was also sent to the hotel within a week after the death of his ex-wife. If we investigate it again, it is not clear why the forced pairing is done. It is not for the sake of future generations (there is a gay option in the hotel), or is it because of the main idea of the leader. The screenplay is by director Yorgos Lanthimos himself, and you can see what interviews you can dig into later.
Metaphor is a magic weapon of utopian cinema. On the one hand, these things, like Hitchcock's McFinger, can be used as suspense to keep the audience curiously watching. On the other hand, you can let the audience chew on the taste after watching the movie, and maybe they can analyze some things that the director and screenwriter did not think of. The so-called unforgettable, there must be echoes.
Finally, the title of the film is that polymorphism is the source of happiness.
