When the narration came out, I had a bad feeling. Generally speaking, the story is told by narration, and most of the directors have encountered a flaw that cannot be expressed. If the narration part of the film is explained through the mouths of doctors and relatives and friends, the effect will be better. Of course, the highest part of the expression can naturally be understood by the audience without being spoken.
For 100 years, Adaline has been hidden in the city, experiencing a strange life every ten years, learning many languages, many skills, knowing many allusions, and gaining insight into world affairs, but she has lost the courage to love her.
The era stalks set in the movie are very attentive. For example, when they play cold knowledge games, they assign role chess, and the phrase "does pink represent girls?". In the 1920s, pink was just beginning to turn from a color that symbolized men to women, and it was not until after World War II that it was officially applied on a large scale and was generally considered to be the exclusive color of women. Adaline, born in 1908, naturally expressed a different opinion at this time.
The rhythm of the whole film is really slow, and the handling of the climax is rough again. But there are still bright spots: the moment the old father throws a quick question before his son gets into the car, and then firmly throws out the car keys, the love of two generations for a woman is completed. Father let go of the past, son firm belief. The white hair at the end of the film and the phrase "Perfect" are the finishing touches.
There are many ways to tell a story that has passed through a hundred years. It can be a grand narrative, it can show the changes of the times through small characters, and it can focus on the inner mentality of the characters. The shortcoming of this film is that the arc of the characters is insufficient. Adaline only shows her change from "dare to love" to "dare to love", without the change of mentality in the face of "eternal life" in the previous decades. If these designs are adequate, it is possible to add another star to the story.
