recognize yourself, accept the difference

I don't know how to talk about the movie itself, I just want to talk about my feelings. After watching the whole movie, my first impression was about "contradiction". How do we treat Merrick? The doctor brought Merrick the respect and life he deserved as a human being, but at the same time some people came to visit with a purpose, which seemed to be just a more civilized way to use and watch Merrick, but it is undeniable that this cannot be avoided, and this is the root of the contradiction. Because of Merrick's deformity and difference, people pay more attention to him. Among the people who pay attention to him, there are ugly people who regard him as a monster and not even as a human being, and the other people come with pity and self-kindness. Concerned about him, there may be very few or even no one who really treats him as an ordinary person! And the elephant man, as a human being, is an unusual individual, and he can only accept it. Here he chooses himself. He accepts the care from outsiders, he doesn't complain about how the ugly people treat him, he just appreciates it. He said to the doctor: "My life is also fulfilled because I know that I am pampered, and I have to get back to myself." Blame himself, and we know he just did what he could, he couldn't stop the people who came to visit, but what he could bring to Merrick was his own home. We are in a contradiction, and all we can do is choose to recognize ourselves and accept the difference.
