Still unfinished, I went back to read the original. I liked a passage in the introduction of Chapter 10 very much, so I copied it down.

The charm of mountaineering is that it makes interpersonal relationships simpler, personal friendships are diluted and communication and cooperation are enhanced, just like battle, other factors replace interpersonal relationships themselves. Adventure is full of magical appeal, and the gritty and unbridled ethos of life it entails is the antidote to the comfort and ease inherent in our culture. It marks a juvenile, frivolous rejection—rejection of blame, of weak will, of complex relationships, of all weaknesses, of life being slow and boring.
